Use of references in artwork

I originally posted this as a comment to one of 
onta's journal posts, but decided it deserved its own post.
I wish I had known it was actually OK to use references when creating artwork, when I started drawing more than ten years ago. For far too long I thought it was "cheating" to use references, and instead held my head high and just kept struggling with proportions and stuff, without ever really getting good at it... Most of the fun of drawing was overshadowed by my constant fear of getting the proportions wrong. It was actually only a few years ago that I finally grew impatient and pissed off at how slowly I developed, let go of my foolish pride and started using reference photos (still feeling pretty ashamed about it though).
If I had realised using references was "OK" all those years ago I bet my art would have been somewhere completely else by now. Or at least I would have been able to put some of that worry-energy to better use.
All the Great Masters used (and use) references. Like my favourite old Swedish painters Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn, and countless others. Of course. But I was too stuck up to realise it. XD

Because Many Among Us Have A Sudenly Inspiration About Somebody Or About Any Particular Element Of An OC Or Any Public Character... The Idea Is Be Respect About What You Are Doing Or Why You Are Doing...
I Have A Lot Of Original Characthers Or OC´s... Inspired 99% Of Them In People Who I Met Or I Apretiate. In My Case Specifically I Can´t Walk With Any Of Those Girls And Said... "Hey! Can You Allow Me Drawing A Sketch About You For Later Drawing In Pervert Scenes?" Of Course Not! But, Talking About The OC´s Of Other People, Likes Your Adorable Image About Hit-Girl! Are Fanart! Because The Girl Is Known By Many People And Have A Lot Of Fans!
You Surf Arround The Net And Likes Me You Can Find OC´s What You Really Likes It For One Or Any Reason! Many Of My Friends Gives Me Gift Drawings About My OC´s... Drawing Likes A Surprise! And I Really Likes It Seen They Take Their Time For Gives Me A Neat And Nice Present! I Think Actually In Some Cases The Best Is Ask Permission To Some People Or At Least Question What They Thinks About The Idea Of Allow Me Or Anybody Else Drawing Their OC´s.
Or Likes Other Times I Made Just Try And Sharing The Image Specifcally With The Ownner Likes A Respect And Admiration Sample! At The Moment I Have Not Problems By That Reason Except With One Person But Was Nothing Serious! Just Feel Surpriced I Drawing Her With Other Outfit. But Likes A Fan You Find Many Characters Who You Apretiate Or Ownner Artists Who Have Skills And Ideas What You Apretiate!
Mmmmmmhhhhhhhh! You Have A Lot Of Good Ideas And Skills! I Not Care If You Sudenly Decided Drawing Hikari, Myriam, Fey Or Any Of My OC´s With Your Abillities Because At Least I Have A Drawing Made For Somebody Who Take The Time For Allow Me Know Likes It My Style Or Any Of My Girls At The End Are Fictional, For That Reason I Not Have Problem In Drawing Them Tied And Gagged Or Simply Making Normal Activities Or In A Sweet Pose! At The End I Likes A Lot Your Skills And Your Ideas!
Is Not That The More Important? Many Of Us Arroun Here Drawing OC´s From Diferent Series And Companies! But With Respect And Sometimes Showing Specifycal Things What We Likes It!
