Man I got similar problems. I've been working at little restaurant in Seattle (basically running the place) for four years and for four years I've been looking for a job what ain't cooking and that I might find stimulating. No luck.

does the restaurant at least pay you too much to leave?

No. I get paid nine dollars an hour plus the tips average twenty dollars a night, so that adds about another three dollars an hour.. Every job that I get offered for cooking pays either the same or less and is considerably further from my house than my restaurant, which is about a twenty minute walk from my house. I've never been offered a job doing anything other than cooking. Something about me just screams "this guy can cook and do nothing else." Maybe it's my bald head, my suspenders, or my thick New England accent.

Do you really need to take classes to know how to design clothes?
To me, it would be a waste of time.
But if you really want to, then go for it.

well, making a pattern for sewing isn't very easy. and if he can't sew for shit, it could help.

Though, going to class and all that just to learn how to sew is still a bit.... something. Iunno.

I am seeing if the whole industry is worth looking into. I also like learning from people who know things that it would take me years to figure out on my own.

You're having a hard time getting work, and you want to educate yourself in a creative field where work is sparse and entirely dependent on you pimping yourself out to the max. I'm not trying to tread on your dreams or anything, but if you're looking to do something practical to fund yourself, arts are not the easiest way to do it.

well it is something I've wanted to do as a hobby. I rather like the academic atmosphere and a structured learning process. And it's all just to see if it interests me.

So maybe pursue it as a minor while you expand your education into a more trade-based field? Perhaps a trade based field that'd lend itself well to your hobbies like industrial design or something.

That's wild. Still no luck, eh? I can totally imagine you in fashion, heh, but maybe if you have trouble finding a job, it might be better to look for one that's more... recession proof? I know it would only add to my irritation if I got another degree and still couldn't find a job. :(

I've signed up for a fashion illustration class. now THERE are some screwed up lookin chicks!!
