Question about AC for artists...

To anyone who has ever sold prints at AC:
How many prints should one bring? I have lots of pictures, and I'm planning on selling prints, but I've never sold prints at a larger venue. How many of each pic is a good number to bring?
Also, which pics do you think would sell best as prints? Should I bring more of those? And I'm thinking about maybe doing some jumbo prints as a limited edition thing, any pics that people might be interested in getting a larger print of?

Good luck in the den. What table are you at? I'll be at F18.
I'm going to be at D22. Good luck to you too! ^^
But as most will probably say, I haven't been to a Con, so I would not know. :P
With this in mind, personally I would have 10 of each on hand, give or take a couple.
no prints D:
In 2000 it was all about prints. Gotta catch them all! Gimme one of everything!
In 2003, name badges were 'in'. People came to cons wanting their name badges made up for each con and people were wearing so many as to cause the term 'badger armor' to be coined.
Now we're in 2008. Portfolios, prints, and name badges are all still there to some extent, but they are no longer the big item. I'm not entirely sure what the new fad is, but I haven't seen any one thing that stands out. I don't do badges anymore at cons because materials needed to take to a con didn't make it worth the hassle. I've found I can make more money doing sketchbooks than from anything else so I can really minimalize what I take.
Perhaps we'll cycle back to fanzines and black and white comics being the new thing. I can only hope!
Good luck ksharra, im sure youll do awesome. And above all have fun
Now I'm cheap with my prints at $5, so your mileage may vary. I typically pull in around $300 in print sales at a con. This year for FC I'll have 15-20 new priints instead of my normal 5-10, so I'll be adjusting my totals accordingly.
This also means I have to yet again thin out my print books and retire older pics. The Bargain Bin is a good way to do this. Pull your old stuff and dump it out there for cheap. For me, that'll be $1-2 probably. I'm more interested in making the prints disappear at cons than in making money. I know my costs and by the time a print is being retired, I've recouped all my printing costs so I can afford to discount them deeply. Besides, those bargain bins cause people to dig through hoping to find another pic they can afford.
Also, giving away prints from the bargain bin can help gain you customers. Hey, you wanted these two prints in the book? Tell you what- buy that third one and you can have two- no, make it THREE prints out of the bargain bin. How's that sound?
And as for the content... come on, it's the furry fandom. COCK COCK COCK!!
If you want to sell LARGER versions of prints, maybe try putting them in the art show/auction. I bet you'd get more money that way too.
And be sure to leave time for doing sketches and con badges for people too! NOM!
First off.. Don't make ALOT of prints.. Cost over Ammount..if anybody tells you it's cheaper to pint in bulk.. thier not lieing..but then your stuck on the last day with 900 copys of each print.. you might as well start wiping your ass with em.. Cause you'll never get rid of em. Make like 5-6 of each print.. nice ones.. And heck if you sell out YOUR AWSOME!.. most likely if you do sell prints..you'll have one or 2 popular prints.. re-print those at a kinko's or UPS store or any local (to the con) printshop..
I made most of my artist alley money off of sketchbooks.. which is a double edged sword.. you may have 300 dollars by the end of the first day....but you also have to cart 30 sketchbooks around..and spend any free time you have at the end of each day knocking out as much as you can.. it IS a JOB.. a FULL TIME JOB... don't expect to see any of the con..
Most people will not buy from the artist alley, they'll humor you, by walking by, asking your prices and then telling you you charge to much..as they walk away and plop down 300 dollars for eric swartz to give them a stick fox in thier sketch book.....cold hard fact is most of the money will be spent in the dealers room.. i despised the dealers room for years.. i thought they were makeing hand over fists of cash.. and i was starving for 10 hours a day in the artist alley cause if i got up for one second to get a coke..my table would be gone...
Now on the flip side.. I'm been in the dealers room 3 years now.. and it's the same shit, just i can now go to the bathroom..without someone jumping in my grave.. Most of money is in sketchbook commisions..
Things i've noticed that set you apart from everyone else pan handleing.. Have a Plackard at your table with your nick, (So fans can find you) with something cute drawn on it, and some basic info like sketchbook costs, (Pencil(no-one ever bothers), B&W Inks, and color(if you do that kinda thing)) A Print Binder G-PG and PG-XXX (if you have that) with something on the cover, cute on the G one and something Sujestive on the Raunchy one..
Prints usually don't sell, Color Prints Do fairly ok, 10 Page Portfolio's (which could contain everything you have as a print already in a conveniant bag at a just slightly lower price, er print useually falls on the cheap at heart) (ie: if you sell a print indavidually at a $1.00 sell all your g-pg print in a portfolio at $9.00..they think they saved .10 a print.. and you sell 10 prints to customer who might have only bought one..)
Anywho I'm ranting.. Don't spend your whole con in the artist alley.. wakeing up at 6:00am each morning so you can be first one at the Artist alley door.. Have fun.. and don't let anybody make you thier slave.. unless you like that kinda thing..
Your Ranting Bussaca..
P.S...this is only my experiances..i hope you've had better.
I actually enjoy the cons, hanging out, drawing, picking up all the creative energy... I'm going to be doing a BIG con for the first time, though, so my biggest fear is taking on more than I can handle. ^^;
You really never know on what's going to truly be popular. Maybe you'll have a piece which you think sucks horribly, and it will just become popular and sell out on the first day. I'm not saying that it'll happen, but it can happen, though!
Use your best judgment.
Sometimes a piece will blow me out of the water in terms of print sales, such as http://www.furaffinity.net/view/198730/
I originally printed 10 of that one, and sold out. Then I printed 10 more, and sold out again. I keep printing small batches to keep up with demand.
However, of all my pieces, this was the only one that was *that* popular. So, the rule of printing no more than 10 of a wildly popular species/subject, and around 5 or less of a more unpopular species/subject seems to hold fairly true.
You can always sell leftover prints at the next Con...it's not like they 'go bad'. ;)
As for print sales declining over the years... it's true. I used to do most of sales at the table in prints 4 or 5 years ago. Now the demand for Badges and sketchbooks has risen like crazy. Especially Badges. People love original art of their character.
