HEADQUARTERS GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC, General Orders No.11, WASHINGTON, D.C., May 5, 1868
"The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country... and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit...
If other eyes grow dull, other hands slack, and other hearts cold in the solemn trust, ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remain to us.
Let us, then, at the time appointed gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with the choicest flowers of spring-time; let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved from dishonor; let us in this solemn presence renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have left among us a sacred charge upon a nation's gratitude, the soldier's and sailor's widow and orphan."
So began the observance of Memorial Day... Please take a moment to remember those who gave "the last full measure of devotion" to preserve our freedom.

Many do not understand what this day represents, even in my shop I'm confounded by ignorance. =+S

What tweaks me is seeing the a-holes at sporting events who can't even be bothered to remove their hats when The Star-Spangled Banner is played. Worse yet, there are those who can't (or won't) stand... I watched an interesting vignette at a minor league baseball game recently. A number of young soldiers (many of whom were in uniform) were sitting directly in front of me. When the National Anthem was played, there was a group of young, Goth-y women and one dude squatting the seats (as it turned out) a three or four rows further down by the third base line railing who didn't stand. They spent the time playing grab-ass with their feet on the railing, talking and laughing. After the soldiers came to Order Arms and broke attention, they all as a group went down and confronted them. The senior NCO (who had just gotten back from a tour in Iraq) led off to the male in the group with "Hey asshole! Are your legs broke or are you intentionally being disrespectful?" The kid started to spout some crap about Nazis and stormtroopers and I could see that a couple of the younger soldiers were getting into the whoop-ass mode when an usher and a cop came down and asked to see their tickets. They fumbled around and one produced a ticket for the cheap seats at which time the usher told them they would have to leave... They went out mouthy, but it probably saved them from getting their asses stomped into the infield...

Tho this does remind me of a wounded Vet I watched beat the crap outta a guy at a local baseball game for not taking off his hat during the exact same kind of occasion. The Vet was beating the living tar outta the dude and when he started to fight back half the section we were in jumped him and threw him outta the gate. God that made me smile like a gator about to sink its fangs into some chosen game! =+D
Well said, General Logan.
To echo the line from National Treasure, "People don't talk that way anymore..."
