Can someone please recommend some good psychological horror/thriller movies? As much as I like bad ones, I think I might have overdone it a bit lately with watching one episode of MST3K per day. Just for reference, some movies I enjoyed greatly are Jacob's Ladder, Session 9, The Others and so on...
(big fan of EH).
Psycho and other Alfred Hitchcock
The Thing
Alien, Aliens
Saw
The Shining.
Recommendations from my mom, the queen of horror movies.
Also, 28 Days Later.
'The jacket' more mind fuck again
'They' its not a bad steven king film
'The Reaping' i thought had its moments
'Brotherhood of the Wolf' fantasy horror
'Hanabil Rising' One of the greatest mind fuck horror films for a long time
End of Evangelion
Jacob's Ladder
the usual. XD
Well, the whole thing is very interpretive, based heavily on Hegelian philosophy and Freudian psychology, maybe a bit of Carl Jung's psychology too. XD
The Shining
The Thing
The Descent (recently saw this one)
Alien
Paranormal Activity
I have only seen the first two of the franchise and the first one is the best one IMO...the 2nd one still has some mindfuck but the story is kind of bleh.
Still, I haven't seen the 3rd one yet so that is up to you if you want to watch it.
Mine had the... uhm, "suicide" ending.
Its on my computer but I haven't gotten around to watching it. :P
-Sunshine—science-fiction thriller that had, in my opinion, a cool concept mixed with beautiful cinematography.
Both beautiful and terrifying.
I haven't really heard much good things about Sunshine, but I might give it a go because I always found something unsettling about the sun. Especially after seeing that episode of Doctor Who where a living star started possessing people on a spaceship. As cheesy as it was, it creeped the hell out of me.
Silent Hill (not so much a great movie, but it certainly falls under psychological horror)
Izo is a Japanese film, and ties with Eraserhead as the biggest mindf*** ever. It is deeply (faaaar too deeply) psychological and philosophical but if you like excessive bizarreness, look no further.
Nightwatch (and its sequel Daywatch) is a Russian film that tries to be cool with action, combining mythical modern fantasy with bizarre imagery. It doesnt strike high as good quality, but is unique enough to be entertaining.
"Let the Right One In" can be labeled horror, thriller, or even psychological, but it is easily best described as literally THE BEST vampire movie ever. It is a Swedish film, so it may be a little difficult to find, but it ranks as one of my favorite movies ever.
"28 Days Later" you probably certainly have heard of or even seen. If not, it is certainly a commentary on the humanity behind survival at all costs, if not at least one of the best zombie movies ever (for a movie in the strongest context, that doesn't actually have zombies)
Paranormal Activity isn't entirely bad (I say its far better than many have said). It's a hit-or-miss with many people, and its safe to say there's a specific element to the movie that could have been improved (but I wont say what, to avoid the closest semblance to a spoiler).
Again, sorry for the long list, but movies are my thing. :D
Silent Hill wasn't such a bad movie considering it was adapted from a videogame, but since I'm a huge fan of said game I'm not allowed to like it :I
I've seen Nightwatch and Daywatch and, as you said, while it isn't top-notch quality, it had some neato little tricks up the sleeve.
I've never seen 28 days/weeks later, kept forgetting about it; thanks for reminding me.
I'll give the other movies a shot, too; I'm especially grateful for that pair of non-mainstream ones, those are always the best.
And don't worry, the bigger the list, the better :D
28 Weeks Later = Decent action/zombie movie.
Izo is by the director Takashi Miike, aka the "Quentin Tarantino of Japan" (though that's a stretch). He's famous for movies such as Ichi the Killer (A confused serial killer Sadist being chased by a Yakuza masochist), and Visitor Q (a family is intruded by a random stranger who influences them to follow through on horrible desires). Both movies are heavily involved with fetishes and anything vile that can go along with them. Filled with the blackest humor (which fell flat for me often), so if you're looking for "psychological" movies that are meant to shock you, just follow that director. He's full of himself though, so don't worry if you think he's trying too hard to confuse you.
I'll say it again too: Let the Right One In. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZJUgsZ56vQ

TL/DR:
28 weeks later isnt what you're looking for. Dont worry if Izo is too much. Let the Right One In x100
