RDR Spoilers
So I finally beat red Dead Redemption, and I'm not happy. Jack Marston is a sorry replacement for his father. He still has that annoying teenager voice, he doesn't have anywhere near the presence his father did and, worst of all, he's mean to my horse. I went through hell to get that horse to the end of the game, and I'll not have some longhaired pissant calling him names and yelling all the time.
I used the Mauser myself..
the only problem I had with it was spamming the attack button before they opened fire.. :P
And yah, the ending did feel kinda rushed.. but still an exelent game.
Here's a bit of a tip for ya, though. Reload your last saved game and just never play the last mission. Problem solved.
And yeah, Jack is definitely a shitty replacement. Here we build quite an empathetic relationship with Marsten for 30+ hours of gameplay just to have him die and get replaced by his obnoxious son who has no real character at all... So, yeah, I understand your frustration.

Would you they rather just ended the game?
I did not want to continue playing RDR as some nameless faceless kid. And once again, I felt mislead and disappointed because I was expecting an open world game to not follow such a linear storyline, and perhaps have multiple endings depending on the players actions.
So basically for me, the game ended completely the moment Jack replaced John, so yeah I would've preferred a straight up fade to black ending rather than play as the little prick son.
It was a sandbox game like almost any other sandbox game. While you could go and do what you want, but the main storyline was linear.
How is that different from any other sandbox game out there?
I don't know if this is true or not but I'm really getting the impression that the ending pissed you off so badly you're just complaining about everything in what was a great game.?
And yes, I am judging an otherwise great game on a terrible ending because endings are an important part of a game, story, movie...anything! Movies and Books can get away with linear endings because there is no "player involvement" (unless it's a choose your own adventure book). In video games this formula changes, especially when playing a game that gives the player free will and moral decisions. The ending in this game felt like being cock-slapped with a heaping dose of predestination, when for 20+ hours we are given an illusion of free will. What made it even worse is that, as the player, Marsten faces many more difficult challenges than what he deals with in the final chapter. I've killed cougars and bears with knives, blown up entire gang hide-outs and was semi-responsible for the Mexican Revolution, but oh NO a dozen people come to my farm and shoot me dead. Yeah, "in-game" Marsten would've kicked the shit out of those guys.
I still like RDR, but I assumed (like I've said in every other comment) that having a fame/honor/morality system meant that ultimately the decisions you make have some kind of consequences other than store discounts.
I've said what I've wanted to say (several times already) and I don't care if you agree with me or not. Since you like the ending and I hate it, there's no point in discussing this further.
The second I heard him scream 'WORK, YA DAMN NAG', I knew that he'd never even come close to replacing John. =/
and the last part of the last "mission" i was wondering why i had to go out the front door... just go around back, use the corner of the barn as cover, and hit them one by one around the corner...
Remember "the yellow bastard" from Sin City? (If you don't or haven't read it yet, don't read further.. and/or sorry for the spoiler.)
Same idea. he knew that the only way to protect the people he loved was for his own life to end and he accepted that and acted on it.
To me that made for a very very powerful and frankly depressing ending.
BUT!...
What really got me was the total "Lack" of use money has, I spent the better part of the game playing poker, doing bounty hunter missions, etc.. till I had quite a few thousand dollars.. only to find that there's NOTHING to spend it on...
Time to try Just cause 2...
But I would have liked to have been able to at least buy and customize John/jack clothes.. (other than the few clothing sets).. or their horse bridle, etc..
it's the little things you know..
Its like I got GTA4 and Saints row 2 at the game time.
I barely touched GTA4 and I love SR2 because of the customization.
As a matter of fact I've caught myself going "Who is that dude int he loading screen? Oh wait, it's THEIR generic hero.. :)
And on the subject of SR2.. I found it to be a great game, but the ending was very disapointing.. but maybe that was just me.. *shrugs*
There's also some DLC that supposedly finishes the story to deal with.
The trick is to do reload a save where John is still alive, then do ABSOLUTLY EVERYTHING except for that which you need Jack for 100% completion. Now you only need to see him for 2 hours.
