She calls it "The Site" with particular antipathy and gravitas) Furthermore, if she doesn't already know that you have an account here, I'd be impressed. Perhaps not. I haven't asked. Maybe you've even linked it to her. It seems like something she would have 'mentioned', if she did know.
Obviously, the next logical step would be for her to create an account; Then this bizarre circle would be concluded.
It's awesome that you're getting into drawing, but am I such a bad influence? It's not like I talk about this place to our family.

I'm all for shooing away the people who aren't furries but have nothing to do besides hang around and shit on everything here, but dude, seriously, this was aimed poorly. I'm pretty furry, but I don't want my family seeing this shit. Not out of shame, but out of the knowledge of how they'd react and just not wanting or needing to deal with that.
There IS a lot about furry that gives people good reason to not want just anybody to know about it.
He's more like why some furries know better than to show furry in general to their families.
Normal people who do hate furries tend to not need anything more than the fact that we like "porn with animals/cartoon characters" to hate us. Whether or not a furry is behaving nonsensically, I think it's very important for furries to not ever be so blind as to blame "normal people" rejection of us on anything that other furries are doing. Take the most grounded and stable furry you can find, and the average normal person will still think they're some kind of weirdo just for being abnormally into porn with animals.
Normal people don't register anthros as "people." They're either cartoon characters or animals. And that's all they need to conclude that we're freaks.
Normal people dislike furries because get this: the average furry has absolutely no social skill whatsoever. He does not understand how to behave when his chosen primary character trait is extremely unsettling to everybody around him. Some furries even gross out other furries by doing this.
It doesn't matter so much that the "normal person" isn't interested in furry characters so much as it is that the furry persons they hate are creepy and unlikeable people besides. Particularly that temperamental person up above who freaked the fuck out over nothing? I wouldn't care if he wasn't a furry. I would still hate him, and his association with any subculture would cause anybody else to hate said subculture by association, particularly since he is nowhere close to the only member of this subculture to act in a completely disgusting way.
There are people who think of furry as animal porn and hate it therefore, but this is completely separate from hating the people who follow it, and hating the porn itself is nowhere near as common.
What I have seen and experienced personally lends itself to my previously stated opinion, and is contrary to the statement you just made. But your experience may have given you a different impression, so it's not something worth arguing. From what you've seen, you're correct and I'm mistaken, and from what I've seen, the opposite applies.

i have been in this community for nearly 12 years now. and i have seen it go from it's once great statue of a nice community to being invaded by a bunch of posers and trolls. and the worst part is most of them blind in with the rest of us due to what they "claim" to be. no the reason normal people hate furs is because when they ask someone from our community what they like most 9 chances out of 10 it's a poser or a troll who replies"the porn!" thus our name we were once proud to boast was smeared through the mud and the worst part is...no one seems to give a bloody damn! only those of us who want this community to survive and not turn into some retard fandom! call me a "purest" if you like but me and others i've spoke to have similar standards of what defines a fur and what defines a poser...and frankly....i won't state names but a lot of the people i see on here often make me wonder.....>.>;
i am one of the few trying to SAVE what's left of our good name and redeem it....but it's near impossible when there are so many out there who just smudge it through the mud again. so do your background before you make accusations.
My family is deeply religious, so I do not think they'd appreciate finding out that I am into the whole yiffy side of the fandom. They'd be happy with the lighter side of it; suiting around and going to cons, the excellent art and my writing, but I do not believe they'd take so kindly if I put up pics with various genitalia on display.
Please don't call me a poser when you know NOTHING about me. I will NOT leave the fandom based on harsh comments by someone I've never met of spoken to. Please keep them to yourself from now on, unless you have something nicer to say.
My younger (nonfurry) sister recently admitted to me that she has a secret account here which she uses to stalk me AND has seen my porn :B and I have another sister here who is furry and my mother checks here from time to time....

I got that in Livejournal recently that i tried to post something NOT serious and my ex girlfriend jumped me because she thought i was totally reffering to her and write me half a page of mail about how i should check my paranoiya and that not all people hate me in secret and so on... that was kinda annoying considering she never sais a thing on anything else i wrote there.
And mom.... glad she doesnt think that much out of the box, they may google for the real name but lucky me not my nick.

Wow, family members knowing about furries and participating. NEVER going to happen to my family. Heck, my family is, at times, way too traditional to look into these kind of stuff. Note here: if my parents ever even stumble upon my stories that involves sex with M/M, she would kill me, heck, probably disown me for the fear of what I've become. >.<
Though, I am quite close to my mum but I try not to have an open discussion about this kind of site.

Seriously though, with my furry name, most IRL people don't know enough to watch me on here, even if they do art and go on here. My friends got a younger sister that got into art, partly due to my influence. :U That would be a concern but I don't think she knows my furry name. Though when she passes a certain age, I'm sure she won't embarrass me about it.
My mom and dad only know enough, in what they need to know for me to go to conventions and that I want to wear a fur suit, but I don't think they know all of the exact context, or what a furry truly is.
God bless the adult block when loged out... gives me the oportunity to show them the clean stuff in he other computer of the house (and incidentally pretend I make the money from the comissions with those drawings xD)

My mom loves that I draw, and is very proud of what I do, though she still finds furries to be quite odd. I think she may have stumbled upon ED when she undoubtedly looked it up.
I'm pretty distant from em all, but I talk to the folks[since I still live with em], but I hate my sister sooo yea xD I wouldn't be surprised if she was spying on me >8|
That happy incident didn't end until I went and bought a pack of fresh printer paper, took it in the back yard, burned it while they were out, kicked the ashes around, then the next time they brought it up, screamed with tear-filled eyes "I burned it, okay?! I burned it all! All my art is GONE and I just won't DRAW anymore!!" then ran to my room crying like an actress.
They never brought it up again.

In my opinion, involvement in this fandom is a mark of great artistic and imaginative ability.
My brother, however, has a weirdly obsessive interest in Glaceon and dragons. I wouldn't be surprised if he at least perused the fandom. Honestly, though, I don't care enough to find out.

My main fear is that my very computer savvy dad finds my FA account and asks me what this is all about. Although I am certain he would disaprove, the real issue is the that I myself am so ashamed of it. Heck, my dad could say that he was infact a furry himself, I wouldn't feel any better though about him knowing I am a furry.
Just kinda wanted to get that out there. Attempts to make me un-hate furries are welcome, I doubt you'll succeed though.

Though this is such a good idea that I am shocked there is not already a worksafe version of the furry fandom made. Or maybe I just managed to not see it.
Before anyone suggests it, just trying to improve the image of furries is impossible. For everytime we do something to look better, 10 people ruin it for us. And it just keeps happening. This fandom is beyond help now, it's almost the definition of the sick and twisted denzens of the net.
