The Last Night of Governor's School
It has been an exhausting but fun five weeks at Governor's School, but tonight is the last night, and the finales are tomorrow. Today, though, was of particular interest. The day started as normal, rehearsal at 8:00 a.m. and Beethoven at 10:00. Everything went well until the Choral Fantasy by Beethoven was underway. The orchestra was rehearsing, listening to the conductor's instruction, when metal clangs and there is a slam on the floor. Silence filled the hall as everyone's attention turned to the noise. A member of the chorus had passed out, hit her chin on the stand of second violinists, and hit the floor. From my position, I could not completely understand everything that had happened. We all suspected that she had locked her knees, causing her to faint, but a Soprano of many years would not have done something so mediocre. Others knew that if she had locked her knees, she would have bounced right back from the fall, however, this is what I've heard, she laid on the floor convulsing. Everyone's next thoughts were of a seizure. Yet, according to members of the choir, there was something else that triggered the incident. Her shoulder was hurting the previous day, and supposedly the pain became so great that her body went into shock. She is fine now, though her chin is now stitched from the impact with the stand.
Nothing else happened during rehearsal. But the day continues. As a member of the music student body, some of us were required to play small ensembles during the finale of the art students. The first performance went without a hitch. I had lunch next, setting by bass outside the cafeteria, in a safe place, resting my music on it as I ate. I come back to get my instrument for the second performance, and my music folder is gone, nowhere to be found. Fretting insues. Still haven't found my folder. After arriving at the second performance site, we are told to move to another area for they have run out of groups. We meander over, and to add to my frustration, there is no one in the room to listen. As it ended up, only one group performed in that room and everyone else left.
That about sums up my day. My bass is now in my dorm room, waiting until tomorrow. I did enjoy the Dance and Theater Finales though, quite entertaining. Time for me too be off to room check. Talk to everyone nextime. Roo
