Project Exploration: Sex Fighters (inquiry 1)
General
As I'm sure many of you are well-aware at this point, I commissioned an idea from
Bonk awhile back depicting a sexual "fighting" game, which he finally published yesterday ( its up at: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4303011 ). Perhaps I was selling the idea short a little bit, I knew that a few furs would say "This game should be made real". Perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised, but the number of people saying that the game needs to be made far exceeded my expectations.
And so.... I am seriously considering actually doing it. But I need some advice to help keep me centered on this, and so I'm hoping you will take some time and answer some questions I have about your personal tastes.
1. (The Obvious) - Do you think this would be a worthwhile project for me to pursue? Will people play it, or do you think it will be a waste of time and effort?
2. If it meant better graphics and smoother gameplay, would you be willing to download this game? Or should it be 100% flash-based?
3. Would you pay money for this game, if it meant higher quality? (Money means I can hire content creators)
4. Most likely the game would be for computer only, at least initially. This limits the interfaces I can support. Would you prefer keyboard sharing controls, or LAN play? Can you think of a better UI system?
5. Would you be willing to donate, or invest in this game, to see that it gets created? If so, as an investor, what would you consider an acceptable return for your investment?
6. I am almost 100% sure that I will not call the final game "Sex Fighters". Any ideas on titles? I thought "Street Yiffer" might be OK, but that kind-of implies that all of the locations are public. Perhaps just "Yiffer" or "Yiff - the Game"? Any ideas would be appreciated.
These are some of the questions I am currently dealing with. If you have an opinion, please let me know what you think, even if (ESPECIALLY if) you think your opinion is contrary to what I want to hear.
Thanks guys, I owe ya

FA+

2. Stick with flash-based, doing a windows-only download games means a lot of people won't be able to play.
3. If I had the money to spend. I don't have a steady job so my income is erratic and unpredictable. Depending on when you talk to me I might have 40 cents or 500 dollars to my name.
4. No opinion
5. You could have an option for donators of a certain amount to have a character in-game. I can't donate at the moment, see #3.
6. Carnal Carnage
I can't say I'd donate (or at least not much) because I'm more or less jobless >3> but I'd give what I could
If the game supported online multiplayer, I think it'd be much more worthwhile to pay for - as playing it with local friends would be difficult because (like myself) I know a lot of people who don't have any furry friends (or many furry tolerant) friends locally.
As for a download? I'd go with a flash version first, and release a downloadable enhanced version that runs on flash still.
As for the actual content - to differentiate the characters, I'd give them each a unique fetish to base moves on, and maybe a finisher that corresponds.
:3
Flash has a lot of limitations that I'm wary of... most prominently - its a CPU hog, which limits how much I can do. it won't look as good in Flash, or be as responsive. The tradeoff is that the user has a game that they don't have to download...
Content... I don't think I will differentiate characters by fetish. There's just too many nasty ones out there, and everybody will want their's represented in the game. I do intend to put my fursona in as a playable character (as sort-of my reward for making the game) but there's a lot of fetishes out there that I would not be comfortable being performed on him.
but yeah, online is a big deal, but you could actually code it in a manner that makes one player the host and the other person join their 'server'
and yeah, it is a CPU hog :< you're right.
you could do it in shockwave or java and still have it as a not-download.
field doesn't look like it's spelled right :x
but yeah, I'd love ot play this <3 even against computers.
I almost thought that was actually real for a second, the interface looked like MUGEN, which is was I'm workin in to design my fighter project. I actually have like... 17 people on my commission list for it, and its an ACTUAL fighting game....
So... I'm sure, that if you made something like.... that.... Furries would jump AAAAAAAALLLLL over that.
XD Fuggin furries....
2. Download. Go like Meat Log Mountain!
3. Yes I would pay. And I would be glad to help if you needed it. I'm more of a story and art guy, though.
4. Why not LAN sharing? Or maybe make an online part where people can play with other furry sex fighters everywhere?
5. I would not mind donating, but maybe an addition of my character into the game if a certain level of donation is made?
6. Get Yiffy - The clash
XDD
2. Good. I prefer this because it gives me more flexibility.
3. Story... not so much needed in a fighting game. Art? I will need art, most likely.
4. LAN is possible, online currently would be too hard. Online requires that I program a server interface and game management system, and that server has to be up 24/7. I'd rather program a working game now, and then get to the server stuff later.
5. Definitely like the idea of adding a character for folks who are willing to donate. The catch is, they'd have to donate more than it costs to add the character. This would be pretty expensive... more than commissioning a flash game, because this game is far more interactive.
6. Its an idea. What about something like "Nymphomaniax" or something? :P
And what if you want to make a story mode? I think a short story mode and arcade or whatever would be fun XD
Story mode? Sure... but once again, I think we're getting ahead of ourselves. That's something I can add later. :D
2. flash, but if possible...downloadable as well
3. I would try...can't promise much, but I definately would try
4. Lan based would be better...keyboard sharing would be difficult for those with small keyboards or laptops
5. Sure, I wouldn't mind donating here and there
6. Climax Combat: The final Thrust
2. I want to stay away from a 2-solution system. I don't want to build the same game twice if I can help it...
3. How much would be the max you'd spend for a downloadable?
4. Yeah I agree. I am looking into multi-gamepad right now, with the option of shared-keyboard if there were no gamepads available, or keyboard + gamepad. LAN is a possibility too. I'd probably support that in either the first release or the first "service pack".
5. Yay! Thanks!
6. Good suggestion. I don't wanna do "Combat" though. Sounds too much like Mortal Kombat
1. take as long as you need if you do pursue it...not like FA is gonna be going anywhere
2. then I'd perfer flash...but thats just my opinion
3. If I can, 15-25 dollars (money is kinda short now T.T)
4. yaaaaay, I only have a laptop so it'd be very squished on a shared keyboard
5. No problem, I would so doante if it helps get a quality piece of work out
6. hmmm...right....Tail lifters: The True Climax...hows that sound?
2. I think I'm gonna try and stay away from flash, for a number of reasons... mostly because its slow and kinda crap for real games, but also because it would be hard, if not impossible, to actually sell copies. Which means it would be difficult to recoup anything I paid into it :/
3. Ok
4. Yayyyyy! :P
5. Thanks!
6. Mmm... getting better. I'd still like a one-worder. What about something like Debauchfurry ? :P
2. For something like this, I think Flash is a better way to go. I don't think too many people want to have stuff downloaded on the computer taking space. However if you are going to go all out and make the game be an actual game then by all means go for a "full version." I'd go flash and test the waters.
3. Price would have to be right for me. I can't tell you if I would pay or not without knowing the price vs what I get.
4. Fighting games on keyboard don't seem to mix, I would invest in see if can map a joystck or pad to it, like game emulators do.
5. I would be interested in being an investor. As an investor, there are many different way to be given a return. This something that would have to be discussed privately
6. [Im]Mortal Yiff, Yiff[s] of Fury, Brutal Yiff[s], King[s] of Yiff[s], Yiff[s] Wars, and Yiffing Instincts are the only knock off titles I can think of

It will probably grow organically. Probably start with a 1 level, 2 characters "demo", and then I'll look for investment. Or perhaps I'll just make the demo extendable and produce "new character & level" packs. I don't want to make the same game twice if I can avoid it. AS3 and is sufficiently different from anything I'd want to program a downloadable game in that I'd really be better off picking one or the other. Right now, I'm kinda leaning towards "full version" because it doesn't have as many limitations on what I can do.
I did some research and discovered that, if folks use standard gamepads (for example, the Logitech PS3 gamepad clone), C# can utilize both at once. That would make it feel just like you're playing on PS3, because you'd both be using one monitor or TV. Unfortunately that also means it has to run from a download, and only Windows would be "officially" supported (although I expect porting it would be fairly simple)
Thanks. I appreciate the comment very muchly!
I like the initial plan to just go and do it your way and see what works and have a demo to show what it potentially can be. It's just more professional that way. Afterward I would be more interested in giving you my money and invest in the game. I do agree making game over twice in other formats is wasteful. It would appear that you want to go with the download which after seeing your replies seems to be the best to be able to add-on to the game for people.
I happen to have an old Microsoft Sidewinder pad from the 90's (Do they even make these anymore?) and so it appears to many people, I am sure, that have game pads for their computers to have in the format. Those evil mac-fur will just have to come to the Windows side. It's those Linux fur to have to watch out for >.>
Glad I was able to help at least in a small way. Just know you have a potential investor down the road if needed. Sorry none of my lame title helped
Thanks for your help, and thanks for your interest in investing. We'll have to see how it turns out.
As for "lame names" - I haven't picked a name yet, so by all means, if you think of something good, I'd love to hear it. I do want to avoid names based on existing games, however. I think it gives the wrong impression. This game is stand-alone. I'm not planning to make it "feel" like Mortal Kombat, and I think naming it "Knotty Kombat" or something like that would be very deceptive. I think I can make the game the most enjoyable by letting it grow organically, rather than rigidly following the structure of an existing game.
2. I don't use consoles, so I would prefer PC, flash or otherwise
3. Yes, I would
4. Whatever the interface, I wouldn't mind so long as it was easy to use
5. Yes, I would be interested in being an investor
6. Honestly, no ideas right off claw. D: I'll let you know if I come up with anything though. :3
2. I wouldn't be able to port to console anyway. They're strict about licensing content, and I'd never be able to get a license.
3. How much would you be willing to pay?
4. Ok
5. Yay! Thanks!
6. Ok :P
5. Keep me up to date and how I can help with this. =3
6. Natural Furry Fighters.
... when I have more time, I'll see about that survey. Bleah, been too busy lately..
As a side note, putting it in flash can either be good, or -really- bad, depending on how you actually plan to make this handle. I find that flash typically isn't good at fighting type games, at least from what I've seen, its always so stiff and hard to control. Usually "beat-em-up" style games are okay but and actually GOOD fighter, involves a lot of good collision detection and attributes and such. I'm generally interested in private/indy games and such.
2. I agree... Flash is pretty cumbersome, but there is some stuff it does well. Specifically - sprite rendering in a 3D environment.... which is something that might be useful in a fighting game. I'm a little wary about the animation speed though, especially considering how much it bogs down the CPU, and how it has very limited device support...
3. I would probably charge a lot less than that... but thanks for your enthusiasm!
4. Yeah I don't think Steam is an option. Right now I'm thinking about support for multiple game-pads on one machine. Eventually built-in online play would be nice, but that requires a bunch of server programming.
5. I probably won't be offering investment options until later anyway, but unfortunately I wouldn't accept IOU's primarily because I'd be using the money to hire part-time artists and programmers to help me, and they'll want to get paid, and probably not in IOUs. :P
6. One thing I want to avoid is playing off of another game. A lot of furs keep making names up that're furry-sex versions of existing games like "Yiffy Kombat" and such. This game is not really going to be based on any existing fighting games, so I don't want to give the impression that it is. Otherwise they might expect similar controls or fatalities or whatnot, and I just don't want to be tied to some standard that might not work as well for this particular game. As for "knots" - I'd fear associating myself with Knotcast.
Right now I'm kinda considering that idea that was posted earlier "Carnal Carnage" except maybe just "carnal" ... although that doesn't really sound furry in itself... soooo yeah - still looking for suggestions :)
Its true that "Carnal Carnage" wouldn't work... that's why I wanted to shorten it to "Carnal". I like one-word names. As for knots and knotcast, yeah I see where you're coming from... and I can't think of many other groups that are more worthy of being associated with... but even so. The idea of a knot-name doesn't resonate with me. There aren't any characters in the game (at least not yet) that have a knot (Jaspian is human-shaped). I just don't want to give people the wrong impression. Knot fetishists might go 'Refund me! There weren't enough knots!' and I might keep away folks who aren't fans of the knot. I dunno.. maybe I'm being overly sensitive.
The IOU thing - I guess I read your post wrong. When you said "I might contribute later if there was a contract", I read it as "I'll sign a contract now promising to contribute later when I have the money". I thought you were suggesting an IOU, and I was just trying to explain why that probably wouldn't work for a project like this one. It's my mistake.
As for a stock offering, I was thinking about that... I'd like to do it, but I don't know what that involves, legally-speaking. I'm pretty sure the government wouldn't be a fan of that idea.....
As for the price... I'm not sure how much I'll charge. I'll have to see how big the hole is in my bank account when the project is complete :)
The knot thing... there will be less foxes and wolves than you might think. This is going to be a real game, with 2D cells. Someone has to draw color & animate all those cells. The amount of time and effort required to animate one character will be fairly high. Therefore, I intend to keep number of characters low... at least initially. That means that I need the characters that I *do* have to be very diverse... similar to how the original Street Fighter was. There were only 2 similar characters: Ken and Ryu. So, I will probably only have one fox and one wolf for canids. Maybe a dog too.
And I will use other people's fursonas, but just because you're famous won't get you a free spot. :P I may end up awarding spots to investors if they want to put a character into the game instead of receiving shares... sorta like a commission. However, submissions will have to be regulated. For example, no underage characters (obviously), no characters from existing IPs (Pokemon, Digimon, Sonic characters, etc), characters must not be too large or small, etc.
I have a fairly prominent artist already, plus myself (I'm not bad, just slow), and I have one part-time programmer. We haven't officially defined the terms yet though. This project isn't officially "greenlighted" yet. I'm still investigating the feasibility. The Bonk pic hasn't even been out a week, you know?
I haven't got a plan yet. I'm still in the planning phase. I'm testing the waters and looking for ideas.
I didn't say you had a connection to Kipfox or any others - I'm just saying that I won't be giving away spots to famous furs just because they're famous. That seems unfair to everybody else who might want it just as bad, if not more.
My art postings are further down in my gallery. Since I am very slow at producing art, there's usually a lot more art in my gallery from artists other than myself. Here's my favorite one that I've done: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/3635299/
1. I really don't think you need to worry about people not playing it , but being worthwhile from the standpoint of time spent vs money gained? Furries aren't known to have lots of money laying around so I'd be careful not to get in over your head before you know the money is there.
2. Download for sure. No sense in putting the amount of effort you're talking about to have the final product all bogged down.
3. Yeah, I'd pay money for it (probably $10-$15 depending). Although, if people are downloading it you can be sure it will get around one way or another.
5. I could donate/invest money for the game, and while having a character made for donating a large amount is a hella awesome idea there could also be a middle ground like having your character on the background screen for a level or something; boosting your number of donators while only adding a relative small amount of work.
Maybe this is a silly question but were you going to be using an all male cast?
3. I can be a total nazi and set up a key server, if it seems like "passing it around" becomes a problem.
5. That's a good idea... do you think people would pay to be a background character though?
I was planning on a mixed cast. Male-leaning, of course because ... well... fighting games are usually all male except for like 2 girls. But also because of the extremely high ratio of gay boys in the fandom.
