Now if you are here you know what you came back for. You knew and so here it is - one lion rant.
I HATE PROFESSIONAL WHINERS
Look I am a writer and a thinker and you know how much I make at those things. Nothing. Not a thing. I have worked with millionaire game makers, professional artists, Apple and Microsoft. I have worked with all of them and you know what. They to the last would shake there collective (and in some cases figurative) head at this entire thing.
I have been a big supporter of artists in this community. Not in my beloved Sci-fi Communities or in Anime or in comics. I have done a bit in those others to be sure but I have time and again come back here to support artists and try to make a difference. I like to think that after a commission with me the artist is happy and fulfilled and has a chance to see something in their art that they have not before. I like my commissions to be a chance to grow not just have made wank material. And I have paid money. And it is artists that have this attitude that make me want to stop!
First, about the person that he is talking about, I do not like that attitude they have either. Just cause I can write does not mean that I must make a story for you. Same thing with artists and singers and chiefs and everyone else that can do things. Talent is shared because you want to do it. It is a gift and not a responsibility on the possessor to give to others. I also hate those that try to use the 'sympathy card' to try to get something for nothing. Look the fact is if you are broke then you are and it hurts to not be able to have everything you want. I understand that. It means that you have to keep your priorities straight. Save your money and do what you need to do to make your RL better. This community is a side-interest to your life. if you can't draw what you want to see things but you have no cash - then learn to draw. If you want a piece of artwork that is too expensive then find something else to occupy your time or even better find a way to improve your position so that next time you can get what you like. it is called "human growth" and I can't recommend it enough.
That said, he is just as bad.
First rule of art back, dating to the stone ages, NEVER INSULT YOUR POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS AND AUDIENCE. If you do then they may never buy anything from you once they have money. Also it devalues your artwork because less people will want it.
Second , Art is NEVER worth the time, materials and effort put into it. The value of artwork is the value that others put on it. A picture of your late Parents on the side of the house may have cost you paint but is it really worth that cost to your neighbors. How about your siblings? How about to your child when they grow up in a few years to see the face of the persons they never have met but have heard about from you for their entire life. But to your Neighborhood Planning committee it is just worth the cost of the paint that they want you to cover up the graffiti with. in many ways that is the very point of art.
Next, being poor is NOT A BAD THING. It is just something that people are. This post gave me the feeling that this person thinks that good people have money. That is not the way it goes. There is not chip in greenbacks that makes them 'think', "oh that person over there is a good person I should move over to him/her and out of the pocket of this not so good person." Get real. Stop believing the wealth lies.
If someone says that the price is too high then the artist can say, "I do want some rarity in my commissions. I like my free time." Or "This is what I like my art to go for but if you like some free samples my gallery is still up."
Professional. Solves the issue. Maintains respect.
Whether he is talking about himself or another, he has gained my ire. To answer his bullet points.
1) Since that person (the one unable to pay) cares that they are unable to pay, they care. Thus it is clear that there is a body that cares. (or did you mean "No one else cares".... which remains to be seen)
2) Artwork is like writing. It is worth what at least one person will pay for it. it does not mater if it is made in 10 minutes or an hour or a year. Art is not a widget and it has nothing to do with "Do you want some fries with that" Think I am joking Look up "Stick Vixen" (or you can follow this link from the artists own hand http://www.furnation.com/eric_schwa.....AC2Kreport.htm)
3) If they charged less then they can make the case that they would do less! So no they will not do a oil piece for the same price as a marker or they may only let the commissioner gets to have less say. All are options. But it is ALWAYS a negotiation DiVinchi had to do it. All the great masters had to do business and deal with patrons. So do furry artists ... deal with it.
4) Being poor does not make you a looser. I could be that you just had a Kid or had to pay for your mom to have the roof repaired or be in the worst world wide recession since the great depression. Being poor means one and only one thing .. you don't have much money! PERIOD. It is in the dictionary - read it.
5) Not everyone wants more money. There are those that are wealthy and happy with no more and no less. There are those that have enough to make it and are happy with life. There are priests and nuns that give up all worldly cares for faith. There are those that have reached a place where they have other concerns in life and pursue them once the basics are taken care of.
6) NO.
Now I can put down my stupid rant cap. and be happy. (Thank goodness no one reads these things. )
