When the lion speaks, he roars cause that is what they do...
It is that time of year when we do a yearly party and make a promise that most of us are destined to fail at. It is the New Years Resolution. Well I am here to in a very few words show you that you don't have to fail at it. After all what is the point of having an old lion around ifthey don't roar good expeience into your ear.
The key to a good new Years resoultion is that you have to follow the rules.I can hear you saying it already - What rules no one toldme about any rules. Well that is the problem you got half the message. Okay well here are the rules. Take notes.
1) Don't declare your New Years resolution on New Years eve and try to start New Years day.
The reason for this is hat you are not having two normal days. You want a New years Resolution to last right. At least a year. Well don't start on a day when you are likely going to be parting, drinking with friends or just in general not caring about such things. Start on the day after. GO ahead an think abut it if you want but it is not official till the 2nd.
2) Be practical
If you make a resolution that you will make so much money that you can buy downtown New York city, this year and your last name is not Gates, Trump or Cardassian, then it ain't going to happen. Give yourself a fighting chance. Why not just start off with, I will make a few dollars more this year by acing my salary bonus reviews. That second one is not only possible but it gives you a way to attain your goal. Don't promise to become a runway model when you are female 50 lbs over weight. It is better to just say that you will try to loose a pound or two a month or you will run a lot more often till you get tired.
3) Write it down in a place where you and (if possible) others will see it in really big letters and every day.
Every day you see it and others will to. Remembering what you promised you will do is really important. It sets you up with an understanding that it matters and that others will see it too. There is a certain value in it being visible , tactile and known that you are going this.
4. Give yourself permission to start again.
This is most important with goals that are ongoing. So you promised that you would stop smoking. You made it a week and now you have the coffin nails in your hands again. You blew it. We all know it and saw it. Take a deep breath and remember... you said you would give it up by the end of the year. Try again. Try to make the time between the mistakes much longer. If you fail again - try it again. Remember you don't learn to ride a bike by stopping after you skin your knee the first time. You get back on and try it again. Your a good person. I would give you my permission to never give up and keep trying. Give yourself that same permission.
5. Cheat in to win.
NO I am not saying just claim victory or say make a really low bar goal. You can already o that if you want and would not have read this far down if you wanted to do that. Nope. Use resources to attain your goal. Talk to people that are doing it. Use books and journals and heck if you have a Android or iDevice then.. there is an app for it. Get support. Your goal is to achieve your goal, not to do it all alone. So if you think that getting help is cheating... Cheat often and cheat to succeed. (yeah I am looking at all you artist out there that think "my art sucks" get a book talk to a friend in other artists and keep going. If you are a writer like me ... iPads have writing aps on them you know. Write anything. But crank out those words per day)
If you follow these 5 rules then there is a really good chance that you will be successful in your New Years Resolution. Now have a safe and Happy New Years.
(Or is that happy Nude Dears... I always get that mixed up :D )
