Sometimes good news pisses me off

I'm sure we're all familiar with the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy in the American military. Well did you know that Judge Virginia Phillips ordered the military to immediately suspend and discontinue any investigation, discharge, separation, or other proceeding that may have been commenced under said policy? It's a huge step forward in gay rights, even though it could very well be brought up for appeal.
When I heard this news, I searched youtube for news reports on it, and found this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xusbui4h17o
It's a news report about the event that's incredibly supportive of it. People talk about how good it is that we will be doing away with the policy; that there has been tons of information that suggests that there is no reason that gay soldiers would inhibit the military at all, etc. etc.
Well folks, I have to say, I listened to this newscast expecting to be filled with joy that this was finally happening, but you know what? All it did was piss me off. You know why? Because everything they said in it is completely and utterly obviously right...and we've had this information for years and years. How the fuck did it take this long??? The DADT policy is the most blatant example of discrimination I have ever seen in a government that I know of. It had literally no reason at all to be implemented, and had an incredible amount of evidence that showed it was not necessary (all of the other armies in the world that didn't have a problem with gay people and which subsequently had no problems because of it, for example).
"Well, alright," you might say, "but it's fixed now, right? So what's the problem?" The problem, folks, is that this means that there was someone or a group of people who had enough power to legally discriminate against Americans. And these people are still out there, still in power, and will still do everything they can to keep gays as second class citizens. And this is all perfectly legal.
I consider the actions of said people to be completely void of morals. In other words, I think that those who would go through such trouble to bully others based on their beliefs are evil. Yes, evil. Not just bad, not just in it for themselves, but blackhearted powermongers. And guess what? They're calling the shots. Or they're calling a significant amount of them at any rate. It's actually right there in that video. Did you notice the part about how the House of Representatives passed an amendment that said that the DADT policy was unconstitutional and should be done away with (sorta a "no duh" for me there), but the Senate simply didn't vote on it yet. It's still sitting on someone's desk somewhere. Presumably, that person saw it, assumed that it would pass, didn't want that, so he is keeping it there until the wind changes and it's more likely to get shot down. What a douchebag. Because of the actions of this one man, the DADT policy's demise is delayed, possibly even prevented. And he sure as hell knows it I'm sure, especially considering they said he "refused" to schedule the vote. It may be some time before we even get things as simple as country wide gay marriage or laws that state that you can't fire someone for being gay. I mean, those things are just as obvious and important, if not more so, than DADT. Why aren't they immediately being fixed? It's outrageous.
But I digress. I promise I'll have a rant for you all on how much I hate the government another time. For now, though, if you want to do your part to get rid of DADT you can sign this petition: http://www.couragecampaign.org/page.....DontDefendDADT
I sincerely hope that I'm making a mountain of a molehill here and gay rights is just around the corner...but even if it is I'll still be pissed that such an evil, discriminatory group of policies was ever allowed to exist at all.
