Got too long for a reply, plus I think we've jacked that thread long enough.
You'd be surprised how many times other weapons are used besides guns.
Here is one for you on the greatness of banning guns:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/1440764.stm
"A new study suggests the use of handguns in crime rose by 40% in the two years after the weapons were banned. "
"Of the 20 police areas with the lowest number of legally held firearms, 10 had an above average level of gun crime.
And of the 20 police areas with the highest levels of legally held guns only two had armed crime levels above the average. "

"The WHO study said a knife was used in 39.5% of killings, and in 12% of all violent crimes, among young people aged 10-29 between 2004 and 2006. And more than one in 10 hospital admissions for assault in the UK involved use of a sharp implement."

Murder stats in 2000 by weapons other than firearms:
Knives or cutting instruments 1,782
Blunt objects (clubs, hammers, etc.) 617
Personal weapons (hands, fists, feet, etc.) 927
Poison 8
Explosives 9
Fire 134
Narcotics 20
Drowning 15
Strangulation 166
Asphyxiation 92
Other weapons or weapons not stated 799
Percentage of overall murders without use of a firearm in 2000: 34.5%
In 2004, the murder of young people (ages 9-29) in the US by knives was 688, out of 6502, or 10.6%. Now, you remove guns from the equation, and factor in the murder rate of young people in the UK by knives, and that number would have been about 2568 killings by knives, if you assume the number of murders were the same..
Seeing as gun laws have actually increased gun crime, and people find other ways to kill each other, what makes you think that guns are bad? People will kill people, no matter what. It is how many people they kill before they are stopped that makes the difference. An innocent person doesn't have a gun. What do they do? They run and hide and hope they don't die as well. And innocent bystander carries a pistol. What do they do? They shoot the bastard and stop them.
Family members get in an argument. One of them goes to get their gun from the bedroom. They shoot the other family member. Gun Control freaks love this one.
Change it up:
Family members get in an argument. One of them goes into the kitchen and gets a knife. They stab the other family member.
Version 2:
Family members get in an argument. One of them angrily grabs something off the desk and swings it at the other family member. It was a paperweight. Family member is dead.
I vote we ban guns, knives, paperweights, fire pokers, pens, pencils, rocks larger than the size of pebbles, automobiles, any liquid that is not consumable, any pest poison, matches, lighters, flints, hammers, mallets, screwdrivers, files, saws, axes, candlestick holders, tire irons, pans, pots, meat thermometers, skewers, scalding hot water, buckets, bath tubs, scissors, glass, stairs, cliffs, vases, air compressors, nail guns, brooms, mops, chairs, wires, cords, string, rope, wooden planks, toasters, trophies, and forks. People should also have their arms amputated at the elbows and knees at birth to keep them from using their hands (or subsequently nubs at the wrists) to attack someone or their feet (or subsequently nubs at their ankles) to attack someone.

I see you never took hunting into account for your reasonings. Shotguns and rifles are the most widely used weapon for hunting. Shotguns match up with handguns for home protection. And all guns are owned for protection from larger outside forces, as mentioned on the other thread. And "machine guns" are only available to people who pay a lot of money to the government and are investigated for months, before the government says "ok, you are good, you can have one now"
I do agree on one thing though, fully automatic handguns are a waste, in terms of general protection, but they do look fun to shoot, anyway. If five people are coming at me, I'd rather control my shots to know I will get them all than expend all my rounds just to take out 2-3 of them.

While that is true, if someone is being attacked with melee weapons, they have a better chance of being able to run away than if they were being shot at
"I see you never took hunting into account for your reasoning. Shotguns and rifles are the most widely used weapon for hunting"
Of course I didn't. What kind of sense is that? "Oh, we shouldn't ban shotguns and rifles to protect people in residential areas" "Why not?" "Because people like going out and killing animals for no reason whatsoever"
"Shotguns match up with handguns for home protection"
Alright, now, I can understand if a robber breaks into your house and has a gun. But if he is unarmed, why use a shotgun on him and kill him? Why not just use a handgun to shoot him in the leg and scare him off?
"And all guns are owned for protection from larger outside forces, as mentioned on the other thread"
I am a fairly paranoid person, but even I'm not wacky enough to believe that the government is going to turn against me and someday attack me
"I'd rather control my shots to know I will get them all than expend all my rounds just to take out 2-3 of them"
Wow, it's clear how much you value human life. Willing to bet you support the death penalty.
Where I live, nothing is farther from the truth. It is VERY common for people (especially in the poverty income bracket) to hunt in order to provide meat for their families throughout the winter and the coming year. Maybe you live in a city and such things are not common, but in Montana having a rifle or shotgun to provide food is just like using a hammer to build a house for your family.
"But if he is unarmed, why use a shotgun on him and kill him? Why not just use a handgun to shoot him in the leg and scare him off?"
You really haven't taken a firearm safety course I see. How do you know the perpetrator won't just become angry and attempt further harm? And in the course of the precious few seconds one has to defend an intruder, do you really think most people have the luxury to override instinct and consider the logic of the situation? In the course of defending your home and family, always shoot for the center of mass and shoot to kill. ALWAYS. And yes, that is legal here too. If my family is threatened, you can be sure I'm going to do anything in my power to protect them. I was also taught (and still practice) to NEVER point a firearm at anything you don't intend to kill, even if you know it's empty.
Are guns dangerous? You bet. They are especially deadly in the hands of the ignorant, though. Like many other social issues, though, I'm of the opinion that education is vital.
Thank you Ski <3
