Have you tried any of the Stronghold series? I haven't played any of them, but I have a friend who really likes them and could talk your ears off about them.

I have. They are all right, but only Crusader is worth any amount of time. The original is okay but lacks a skirmish mode, and stronghold 2 is just kinda sad. they packed too much into something that gets boring too fast due to little imagination and dynamic gaming.

The only thing that pops to mind that might fit your description is Spellforce 2. I haven't played it enough to guarantee that it fits what you want, but it certainly came across as an RTS with micro management. Although it's also half RPG... Dunno if that'd be a problem. The only other RTS that I can think of is an old game called Total Annihilation. It's fun and unique, but I don't think there are any walls to build in it.
