Layout preview (new BB site)
I haven't even begun the actual coding, but at least I've had time to start playing with layout ideas over the past few days:
http://pokemonbusting.heroku.com/new/layout
(Note: This is just an early HTML/CSS mock-up -- it doesn't work at all. Also, I can only guarantee that it will look good in Safari or Chrome. Firefox probably has some colors wrong at this point; I imagine IE just throws a hissy fit.)
My existing Pokemon site just sort of happened, without much thought as to design or presentation, but I'm trying to make the new one a little nicer. It's good practice, even if I can't really point to it in the future as an example of my work :P
This still has a long ways to go, both design- and development-wise, but at least I'm starting. More updates to come.

FA+

Looks a lot neater and more organised than the current one and also gives a feel for the 'damage' which the current model left you guessing for heh.
Should be great once you implement it.
BTW, that view summary link above the description of the battle..will that put any more description into the attacks or just list out the previous attacks?
~Gen
I was planning for the "full summary" to just be a list of all the attacks thus far -- I haven't really thought about expanding it. If you've got any suggestions on how I could do that, please, let me know. The launch version of the new site will probably be pretty basic, but I'm hoping to throw in a few new surprises to make it worth switching :)

On that note, though, I'm not going to be supporting anything before IE8 -- it's a lot of work that I'm just not interested in doing. IE8 should work fine, but it'll lack some of the prettier touches.
I use Firefox and it looked perfectly fine.
Attack buttons text color should be darker.
Very nice.
I was meaning to ask you, actually: I don't know if you noticed, but there's a little slot in the upper-left corner of this new layout that says "LOGO". I've been trying to come up with something simple to put there, probably just a symbol or a silhouette of some kind, but I haven't yet found a logo I like. Ideally it would work as a 16x16 favicon, but also as a medium-sized logo for the login page and some other pages. I'll probably figure it out on my own eventually, but if you have any ideas, let me know :)
Also, that Kangaskhan pic is preeeetty much my favorite on the current site. Might be a tie between her and Dragonair :P
I like aerodactyl and lickitung (except she made me laugh too hard) a lot
Also... you are opening up the ability to create characters and moves? Will there be leveling? how will the stat thing work? Would there be graphics to go with created characters?
I know it's not the politest thing in the world to use other people's artwork without asking, and for that I apologize. I tried to mitigate that problem by only using artwork directly from rule34.paheal.net (i.e. artwork that has been implicitly approved for public consumption by the artist), but I know that's still not a clean-cut solution. If you're the artist of a particular picture and you want it removed, just PM me and I'll remove it ASAP.
I'm a pretty strong proponent of ownership rights and the like, so the whole thing still makes me a little uncomfortable, but that's the best compromise I could find. So far I haven't had any problems, though that's probably because the site is pretty low-traffic (and the fact that it takes a few rounds of ballbusting to unlock porn pics anyway).
As for the new site: yes, characters and moves will be user-created. I'll probably start the site out with a few characters of my own as examples, but only a dozen or so -- after that, I'm expecting everyone else to add characters to suit their own interests. I'm still working out all the technical/implementation details, but the stats system will be point-based (i.e. you get XX points to distribute among X categories), the graphics will be supplied by the user (i.e. enter a URL pointing to the image you want to use), and there will be leveling up (though probably not at launch). It's gonna be tricky to pull off, but I'm hopeful.
I keep abortively start-stopping on a story set (very) loosely in that league, but I also keep trailing off into various distractions. (This month's distraction: Actually -playing- Pokemon.)
Really should sit down, figure out a proper cast and bash it out one day. I know loosely how it ought to go.
And please, please do bash out another story one of these days...emphasis on the bashing :P I'd love to see your take on this twisted little league, or on anything else for that matter. If Gym Class Accident is anything to judge by, I'm eagerly looking forward to it :)
there are too many species of Pokemon, and is it possible to give out only a part of them by settings? I mean some people do not like certain species, or certain generation of pokemons. For examples, I usually avoid any non-mammals (expecially an occasional dragon), and I am very unfamiliar with the fourth and fifth generation. So maybe you can add a function to personal settings, to allow the user choose "classes" (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, invertebrates, plants, fungi, non-organisms), and generations (I-Kanto, II-Jhoto, III-Hoenne, IV-Shinno, etc), so only the species the user feel comfortable with will appear on his/her list. (I bet some people here do not accept the idea that a stone pillar have testicles, and they are not made of stone)
Also, for those who know not much about pokemon or accustomed to other translations, maybe a brief introduction can be applied. It can be even a few words, such as Growlithe (red canine). Or "national code index", with Bulbasaur being 001 and Deoxys being 386 like that.
Thank you very much!
Sorry I have a typo in this sentence, it's except not expecially.
I can send you a copy.
in 493 pokemon species, there are
167 mammals, 40 birds, 62 reptiles (including dragons), 12 amphibians, 26 fishes, 69 invertebrates (including insects), 45 plants, 7 fungi, 27 non-organisms (mineral and metal), and 54 unclassified species (including ghosts).
The border line between mammals and reptiles is not very clear, and my decisions may be not the best. The total number is greater than 493 because a few of them are double classified, like Bulbasaur is amphibian and plant. Thank you!
