YouTube Popularity is a Bitch
A-ha-ha! You are as PRESUMPTUOUS as you are POOR and IRISH.
Having over 8000 subscribers is a bitch.
So recently, I'm trying to keep my "YouTube identity" out of the rest of my "Internet identity". I just have the urge to... ugh... meet new friends on the Internet that DO NOT know who I really am, and of course no more fanboy friend invites on Steam.
I changed my Steam profile completely and tried my best to not having it any linking to my YouTube identity, and I of course made accounts on a few sites without the same nickname.
I also met a cool person on Facepunch who doesn't really know me, and I do not want him or anyone else new to find out.
Basically, I'm tired of my fanboys finding my Steam profile, people adding me as a "friend" just for bragging rights and never talking at all, and all that shit.
This Garry's Mod video shit is generating both fanboys and haters, I just want neither of those on the other sites I go to besides YouTube.
Trust me, you DO NOT want to become popular in any way at all.
Fuck

FA+

I never wanted to become that popular, but I always want people to know and recognize me.
Don't worry, you have other GModders on FA that share the same feeling.
By the way, the valve movie directing thing is much more cooler than the usual garry's mod videos.
fuck fuck fuck
Anyways, yeah... there's fanboys, and then there are actual friends; however, try to think of fanboys from this angle... there are thousands of people who actually LIKE you for your humor and your vids, and if they wanna buddy up to brag, they're bragging about you in a GOOD way-- not trashing your name. ;o)
And hey, if floods of "I love your vids" are getting you down, just post on your profile somewhere something along the lines of "thanks for the comments and the views". :oP
YouTube (and even FA) popularity has its ups and downs, but the best way to deal with it is to keep doing your own thing and don't let the audience burden you... ;o)
Hang in there, Julie *hugs tight* ^u^
Why would you take it personally? I mean, it wasn't aimed at you or anything, I was talking about the hordes of fanboys who treat me as the highest society. D:
Also, those who add me as a friend just to brag - they never ever talk to me at all or are just constantly repeating memes all over the place, and their friends list is full of other popular youtubers. Sometimes they even go "Hey, I'm a friend of [popular gmodder], so I think it would be appropriate for me to add you as well!"
Though, I should mention I do try to treat others as the higher society from me... but I also try to break those initial "I'm not worthy" fanboyish thoughts at the same time... :oP
I know what you mean, though... >.>
YouTube usually isn't the place to gain hordes of true friends, though; people can pick up several every now and then, but usually not as much as they pick up fanboys. ;o)
... also, the majority of viewers on YT these days are kids, and in the 21st century, kids show their "appreciation" by spreading memes and such because they find it amusing... XoP
As for the ones who stay silent when and after they add you, my suggestion is to be the first to strike up conversation if you think there's good friend potential, because they might be shy... :oP
Now, I'm perplexed about something... if all the users following you on YouTube WERE friends and not fanboys, how is it humanly possible to stay in contact with each and still be able to, for example, do schoolwork? e.o
