Robot refers to any automated machiney thing, an android is a robot that is designed to look and/or behave like a human. Android is a subsection of robot.

But it still has the looks of a human with a behavior/personality of a human as well. Even if the android doesn't have any (semi)organic material to cover the technological body, as long as it acts human, is sentient, and believes it to be something more then just wires and chips then it's still not really a pure robot. It's like... Data from Star Trek is an android and HAL 9000 from Space Odyssey is a robot.

Robots and androids can be pretty close to being the same physically, but it's how they act/work that separates them.

In many 'verses of technology, it's said that living brains are complicated enough to run processes faster and much more efficient then the technological server kind (which I never got since you need to have a mutation to have some sector of the brain to accidentally be sorted in the processing area (like, motor function and breathing) to calculate things at near-instant speeds [see the Calculator Man]). So, living brains are put into the automatons to make them run and the personality/behavior tags along with the mechanical body and would class it as an android. Murphy and Kain from Robocop 2 would be considered androids (well, no, Murphy -does- have some internal organs still, so I guess he's more of a cyborg really now that I think about it).
