oy, some people.

Okay, so I tend to be pretty open minded to most things, from political views to religion, even though I dislike politics and I'm not a religious person. I was brought up to respect people for who/what they are, even if I don't agree with it. But one thing I DON'T tolerate very well is flagrant hate speech.
I have been working in Silsbee all this week. I sell newspaper subscriptions and honestly I can't remember if I offered this guy anything or not, he was THAT non-descript looking. But anyway, he comes over at random to my booth and seems very irate, and says, "I have a question."
So, normally this means that a person is upset with their delivery service or the content of the newspaper itself. I ask him what is the matter. He responds in some broken hick language, and I can barely make out what he is saying, but all I catch is something about "Why was Obama elected as president?" and something about a tax increase.
So I'm like... "Um, sir, I have no involvement with politics in any way, so I can't answer that for you." He then proceeds to ask me if I know what Obama is. (Here we go.)
I stupidly blurt out, "Um, the president?" and he SLAPS MY BOOTH and says, "I'll tell you what Obama is, Obama's one big NI**ER!"
Okay. I'm in public AND I'm working, so I really have to keep my cool, but I really wanted to tear him up for that comment.
I say something along the lines of, "Well, that is YOUR opinion, but I disagree." He tells me again what he thinks Obama is, because that's what HIS BOSS says. (He mentioned "his boss" multiple times, so I think his boss = God.) I say, "Actually, Obama's father was black and his mother was white, so he's not really black at all." (Cue another rant from this guy.)
I'm just nodding at this point and trying to usher him away from my table. So he says again, "My boss tells me that Obama's a ni**er.... and guess what else he tells me? That women should wear their hair long, not show off their bodies and wear beautiful dresses every day!" Cue him storming out.
So yeah. That was my experience in a nutshell. I can honestly say in all my years of living in Texas, he was the first guy of his kind I've ever encountered. Hopefully the last.

FA+

They kinda have old world views still in that area especially around Vidor which is immature given if you hate Obama or you don't he still is our commander in Chief.
Some of things he's doing I don't agree with but I'm not going to race card him because he's done what no other black person before him has in being president.
I don't like the guy but I know where you are coming from here knowing some people from the area That carp has been going on since the 1800s and there still is a huge KKK presence where you are.
Heck up by where I live up in Conroe there used to be a KKK meeting place there but it's been moved underground.
But, racism exists everywhere, whether it's obvious or not. :/
Anyway, I don't agree with everything Obama does either, but he seemed to hate him based SOLELY on the color of his skin, rather than his actual performance as a president. Meh.
It's sad old world beliefs still exist but that's the way it's always been there because the KKK got a hold of the area the second it was settled.
Unfortunately it is an older generation who is passing on the gene to our generation and a generation above us. Mark my words they are nice people when they want to be but get in their cross hairs and they'll do everything they can to make your cyber life and your real life a living hell.
If I could take it back I'd of never dealt with people like the ones I've met in the past.
The sad truth is the racism hub is there, it's been documented and seen which is sad but it also gives you a huge wake up call if you are gay.
I hope both you and your boyfriend keep your ears to the wind because I personally know how gays are viewed in hat part of the country
Be lucky Houston has an openly gay mayor because if it wasn't for people like her Houston would be a shade of there. I'm lucky to live in such an open city like here so if you can move here do it because Houston is loads better to be a gay person in then there.
As for Obama,
I agree with you and he is our president so give him credit and respect for what he's been able to do. Sure, I don't like the guy as a president but as a person he's great at what he does being a guy you could shoot the breeze with.
Anyway... I'm a Houston native and lived there 22 years. Houston is a great city; I moved to the Beaumont area five years ago due to my boyfriend asking me to move in with him. I don't plan on living here the rest of my life, eventually we'd like to move to Fort Worth.
*Most* people I talk to around here are nice; like I said, this guy is the first person of the type that I've met, although I've known about the KKK stuff for years. We live in the Port Arthur-ish area, which is largely black or hispanic, so there isn't much KKK influence here, if any.
Anyway,
I hope you two can move to where you're happy. I've wanted to see Fort Worth myself because it's the only city up there in north Texas I would live in because Dallas seems really preppy to me.
At least in Fort Worth you get a great mix of cowboys and people who wear real cowboy hats. I was told by members of a Texas band once that the felt hat wearing people are from Dallas while the real cowboys live in Fort Worth
Fort Worth has a little bit of something for everyone though, like any city. I like it because it's a cute little college town, but it's not as snobby or commercial as Dallas is. And they have a nice zoo and botanical gardens. :D
Nasty...
