They expand a lot... there was a large gap between the first movie and the series' both in time, and direction. The Tv shows aren't made by the same people, and tell a related, but different story, though the characters from the movie return and it's considered canon. Give the TV shows a chance! Your complaint is valid and I understand, but as a mythology nut who loved the series' I'd suggest you at least try it.

I kinda agree that the way they twist the mythology into a type of conspiracy thing is rather disheartening. However, I still enjoyed SG-1 and if you can't take the mythology presented as the basis of SG-1, then I suggest you give SG Atlantis a chance because it is completely different from SG-1 because they dont really fight the Goa'uld over there and it has little connection to anything earth like.

Also, Lance is right, much later onto SG-1, they diverge from the goa'uld to focusing on the ori, the TV series is too different from the movie imo.

I think you're getting a bit hung up on something relatively minor and missing out on a great series because of it. The concept behind Stargate isn't a bad one, and hell, it's pretty fleshed out compared to a lot of other sci-fi series. Part of what makes films, tv series, games, novels, and fiction in general is the suspension of belief and preconceptions to just enjoy a series, and that sometimes means giving into a concept that you may not necessarily like the idea of, and being unwilling to give something a try just because of that is a bit of a closed-minded approach. Hell, I finally got around to playing Dragon Age: Origins, a game I was very apprehensive of because I'm tired of the "standard fantasy setting" (Elves, Dwarves, Humans, Dragons, Orcs (or at least what amount to them), and all those other Tolkein concepts Fantasy hasn't seemed to grow out of in almost a century), but if I had outright refused to play it, I would've missed out on a great game that I highly enjoyed.

In any case, you should at least give SG-1 a chance, it's a great series (though it kinda fizzled in the last couple seasons).

Oh, trust me. I'm not biased that way at all. I played through all three God of War games to see how the trilogy was for myself before coming up with the conclusion that Kratos is a scumbag (I actually gathered that conclusion after the beginning of the second game, but I had already purchased all three for the PS3 and wanted to at least finish playing them). Mostly a lot of the problems I have with products, characters or stories I have after I experience them, another example being that poor excuse of a Tekken movie. I knew it was going to be shit before I even downloaded the movie, but I still felt I needed to watch it to judge it fairly.

Watching the first Stargate movie was me learning about what the franchise was about. I had never seen the movie all the way, and I only ever caught glimpses of SG-1 while channel traveling. I figured that if I wanted to learn something about a franchise, I might as well start from the source. So I was open to learning about it. I guess maybe I should've started with the television show instead of the Kurt Russell movie then. lol

But from what you guys are telling me, I might give Atlantis a shot. Besides; the new Conan the Barbarian is in that one. He's hot.

Unrelated, Ra and Anubis..and I think Horus too, are common gods used in the Age Of Mythology game. The obsession with animal headed dudes and the main chick continues. Go figure.


Remember the year that this movie was made in, And theeeen think how it would be made today. That's the difference batween the TV shows and the movie. You might like the TV shows.

Stargate Atlantis was really good! Give it a try. SG-1 though butchered every world mythology available. Khemetic gods weren't the only victims. xP

the first movie is the ONLY thing about stargate that I actualy like. Like Gmoose said. They are the 3 common Gods that people actually know about. the wonder of sci fi is that you can really do whatever you want with something...like make random parasite aliens that have egyptian culture XD

I actually found it to be a rather interesting interpretation on the whole thing and quite enjoyed the movie and SG-1. As long as you don't really take too much offense to the mythological aspect it's rather good. Don't be too disheartened by it.
