On hunting and Veganism
It is becoming more common for people to choose vegan-ism. The worst of these converts do so as form of masturbatory inflection of their presenting persona and denigrate other choices from a self perceived position of moral superiority. Meat is cruel! Rise above your animalistic instincts!
They are especially vociferous regarding hunting as a cruel and unusual thing for men (or woman) to stroke their egos: this view is more common in vegan and vegetarian communities but is more widespread than to be specifically assigned to either group.
As a hunter, and in defense of hunting, I will say:
Look how far removed you are from your natural place in any natural ecology.
Look how deviated your diet is from that which your body is designed to handle.
Look to what extremes you must go to satisfy normal dietary requirement.
Look how much you rely upon an infrastructure to provide your specialized foods.
See how the chemical reactions in plants upon damage mimics that of a physiological response to injury in any animal.
Look how far you have deviated from the traditions of your ancestors.
You say eating meat is cruel but I will tell you it is just as nature intended: natural, normal, and ambivalent if not cold. Relinquishing your natural place in any semblance of ecology is so too to separate yourself from nature. You may go walks at the park, hikes or camping trips but there is always going to be a missing part or skewed vision regarding natural order and your place in it.
And to those detractors of hunting? I will tell you that no matter how translucent or gilded a cage may be, it is still a cage. It still detracts from the natural life that that animal would have had. An animal hunted has lived a normal life fraught with the normal dangers and wonder. A hunted animal, whether fallen to wolf or man, has performed his life without the cage, without human handlers, and according to what luck it may possess. Its life is infinitely more nuanced and wondrous than the freest of free range animals. When given the choice to eat of the free or the caged, it is more humane to hunt and eat of the free.
Forgive the rant, it is directed at no one in particular and is merely venting regarding the often times maligned reputation of hunters.
