Wrestling Ramble 2: My Night of Champions Predictions
14 years ago
Alright! Night of Champions is tonight and I feel I should go on another Wrestling Ramble about my predictions for the event! I'm going to predict the matches and talk about them in the order that I think they will happen on the PPV.
Match Number One: Intercontintal Champion Cody Rhodes vs. Ted DiBiase
This one has a lot of history to it, history that I feel the commentators haven't really sold to us on Smackdown, a history that the WWE itselt hasn't really played up that much.
Rhodes and DiBiase go way back, way back to a time when Cody Rhodes was teaming with the useless Hardcore Holly and being a generic pants man that I disliked so, so much. But my main reason for disliking him was Hardcore Holly. When Rhodes turned heel on Holly and joined forces with the fresh and exciting Ted DiBiase, I thought it was fantastic!
And fantastic it was, the duo made a fantastic tag team, playing off each other wonderfully. Even during their time with Randy Orton in Legacy, Rhodes and DiBiase still excelled as a team, one of their most notable matches being their battle with D-Generation X at SummerSlam and their re-match at Breaking Point (their match at Hell in a Cell was sub-par I thought).
But during this team, everyone looked at Ted DiBiase as the star of the team, everyone thought he'd be the future and much like the team of Miz and Morrison, how wrong everyone was.
For when Legacy split up, it was Cody Rhodes who rised to stardom, he got given the ball with his Dashing gimmick and he ran with it, he ran with it all the way to a big deal story line with Rey Mysterio, his gimmick evolved and he became the mask wearing Cody Rhodes who we have today.
Meanwhile, Ted DiBiase was lumped with his father's gimmick, but a watered down Diet Coke version of it that didn't get over. Now don't get me wrong, Ted DiBiase is a fantastic wrestler, just see his matches with Daniel Bryan and hell, even Goldust! DiBiase just doesn't have much in the range of charisma or personality. At least not from what I've seen.
Perhaps WWE have just been holding DiBiase back? Perhaps he's just not been given the chance to shine in WWE.
Of course, WWE's solution to this was to pair him up with Cody Rhodes again, but this time, having Rhodes as the man who had found success and DiBiase as the loser who is just trying to cling to his career by getting lessons from his former tag team partner. It was strange but somewhat satisfying to see Ted DiBiase with a bag over his head, being told by the man who once everyone considered the "Marty Jannety" of the team, that he was useless and will never amount to anything remotely succesful in the WWE.
Then of course, Rhodes planted DiBiaase and logically, DiBiase got his revenge. But it all seems so rushed, they should have had weeks, months even, of DiBiase getting pushed around by Rhodes, told that he's no good, told that he'll never break through the glass ceiling. DiBiase should have put up with verbal, hell, even pshycial abuse for ages before finally snapping. I think he would have gotten over as a babyface much more.
But anyway, here we come to the match tonight and I can only hope and pray that Cody Rhodes is not only still the Intercontinental Champion by the end of the night, but also goes over clean. Sure, a victory for DiBiase would help him, but they are pushing Rhodes as the savior of the Interconntinetal title and what a better way to have that push continue by having him go over clean?
My prediction: Cody Rhodes wins clean.
Match Number Two: WWE Tag Team Champions Kofi Kingston & Evan Bourne "Air Boom" vs. The Miz & R-Truth "The Awesome Truth"
"Now we have two interracial tag teams" - WWECreative on Twitter
These two teams have just been completely thrown together at random, but I like it. You could tell that WWE desperatly wanted to get the tag team titles off of Michael McGillicutty and David Otunga as soon as possible, because having those two on PPV would be a disaster! So they slapped the belts of the random pairing of Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne.
Now, these two aren't too random, they have always been buddies on screen and I presume buddies in reality, not only that, but they explained in an interview that they had been discussing teaming up for a long time (some of those discussions on screen would have helped), and the pairing do make for a good team.
As for The Awesome Truth, they are still a random pairing, but not completely random. Both men have a gripe with the company, both claiming they are underutilised and underappreciated and that there is a conspiracy to hold them back. Plus, everything Miz & Truth have done together has been gold (Does anyone remember the feud they had last year? They had a match at Fatal 4 Way, The Miz took the piss out of Truth's rap. Guess that's water under the bridge now).
I've not got much to say about this match, just that I hope that Awesome Truth win the titles and breath fresh air into the tag team division.
My prediction: The Awesome Truth win, not clean.
Match Number Three: United States Champion Dolph Ziggler vs. Jack Swagger vs. John Morrison vs. Alex Riley
Wow! This match was thrown together at the last minute wasn't it? I know, I know. Ziggler and Swagger have been arguging over Vickie for a few weeks, and of course, WWE can't do a heel vs. heel match on PPV, so they had to throw in Morrison and Riley who have been mostly uninvoled in this story line.
Not a lot I can say about this match either, I'd say, lose Alex Riley and you've probably got yourself a classic here, I wonder, how much will Riley mess up in this match? Will he bring the tone down or will he surprise me and be able to keep up with Morrison, Ziggler and Swagger... In fact, my ideal situation would for them to ditch both Riley and Swagger from this match and just have Ziggler vs. Morrison, that would be a top notch match!
I can't see them taking the belt off of Ziggler and giving it to any of the other three, it'd seem pointless... Unless, they gave the belt to Swagger to keep this little feud going and possibly head towards a face turn for Ziggler or Swagger (I'd prefer Swagger.)
My prediction: Jack Swagger wins the title by pinned Alex Riley, Ziggler will not be pleased.
Match Number Four: World Heavyweight Champion Randy Orton vs. Mark Henry
Wow, I've predicted a lot of heel victories so far, either this is the way it'll all go down or I'm wrong... If I'm correct so far then I really can't see WWE booking another heel to win, that'd be heel overload.
I'd be more inclined to go back and change a previous prediction, like, perhaps have AirBoom retain the tag titles after all, but no, I've made my choices and sticking to them!
There is another factor in my prediction for this match though; they've booked Mark Henry like a monster lately, they've booked him so strong that he's obviously going to lose.
You can't be booked that strong and then go on to win, I know, I know, it makes too much sense for Mark Henry to continue being the monster he is and win the championship and continue to dominate Smackdown for a few more months before losing it and retiring. But this is WWE, you know it as much as I do that Mark Henry has only been booked this strong so that when he loses to Orton, people will look at Orton and think "Wow! Orton is a beast! He was the one who finally put an end to Henry's reign of terror! Not even Big Show, Kane, (Vladimir Kozlov) or Sheamus could do that!"
So in short, my prediction: Randy Orton wins, squeeky clean, with an RKO out of nowhere.
Match Number Five: This is a tough guess... I'm going to go ahead and say... Diva's Champion Kelly Kelly vs. Beth Pheonix.
Next!
No, seriously, I will talk about this match. I just want talk about it much.
Now, I'll be honest, if I'm not watching RAW or Smackdown live, then I'll skip the women's matches, I'll skip the women's segments, I'll skip it all and wont even give it a chance. Mostly because it's all trash.
There are very few things in the diva's division that are not trash, Beth Pheonix is one of them. But even the brilliance that is Beth Pheonix wont be able to work a decent match with Kelly Kelly.
Kelly Kelly is just bad! She botches bulldogs, she can't run the ropes, she's just... She's... She's everything that's wrong with the diva's division and this is the whole point of what Pheonix and Natalyia are getting at.
This story line could work so much better, with Natalyia and Pheonix dolling themselves up so much with make up and lipstick that they just look like some one fired that make-up shotgun from The Simpsons into their faces! They could be the crazy diva's who look in the mirror screaming "I'M PRETTY TOO!"
I'm sure this storyline was originally intended for Kharma.
My prediction: Pheonix wins the championship in what will be the last heel victory of the night.
Match Number Six: WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio vs. John Cena
Now, with that last statement of it being the final heel victory of the night, it must make you think that you can predict my next prediction. But can you? Can you really? I think yes. Yes you can.
You all know my opinions on this match and it's storyline from my last Wrestling Ramble, but I didn't mention how I think this match will play out.
What I'd love is for Alberto Del Rio to go toe to toe with Cena, take him to the limit, to prove all the critics (especially Cena), wrong! But he just wont be able to put Cena away, the valient Cena just keeps on surviving the arm bar, getting close to tapping a few times, but either escaping out or getting to the ropes, hell, Del Rio can even pull out some really mean looking slam, perhaps a superplex, but still, Cena kicks out.
In the end Del Rio has no choice, he knows he can't beat Cena and he's starting to worry, and then either Ricardo distracts the ref allowing Del Rio to clock Cena with the championship belt right to the face and get the pin or Del Rio just smash Cena with the belt right in front of the ref, lose by DQ and thusly keep the title.
That's how I'd book it... But how will WWE book it? I think like this:
Alberto Del Rio beats down Cena for 10 minutes before Cena hits his come back, shoulder block, shoulder block, five knuckle shuffe, Attitude Adjustment attempt but Del Rio escapes and beats down Cena for 3 more minutes before Cena hits the AA, but Del Rio is dragged out of the ring by Ricardo, tries to leave with the belt, Cena chases after him and that's when Del Rio will smash him with the belt and get DQ'd.
Thusly, Cena wins, it's a babyface victory, but Del Rio keeps the belt, feud goes on.
My prediction: John Cena wins via DQ.
Match Number Seven: CM Punk vs. Triple H in a no DQ match
As with the Cena vs. Alberto Del Rio match, I already spoke about my opinions on this story line in my last Wrestling Ramble, but now, to talk about the actual match.
The non title match goes on last at Night of Champions, but it really should. This is the only match anyone cares about for this PPV, this entire PPV is being sold on this match alone really, everything else is just mandatory filler.
So I'm expecting a battle here, I've noticed that all of Triple H's matches lately (Well, his match with Undertaker at WM27 and now this one) have been no DQ.
Is this to hide the fact that Triple H can't go anymore? I doubt it, it's just so that he can be violent. With all the shooting that has been going on in this story line too, can we expect a chair shot to the head?
My hope here is that Triple H doesn't get out his trust shovel and bury CM Punk, a lot of people I've spoken to about this match are worried this'll happen. Just because of Triple H's ego and the fact that he is The Game, he wont even let the super over Punk win this match.
But my predictions are optimistic, I believe Triple H has changed since his semi-retirment, I beleive he will put Punk over and the two of them will have a match which'll rate anywhere between decent and pure awesome.
It'll be full of outside fighting, a spanish announcer's table getting destroyed, weapons and of course, run ins. A run in from Kevin Nash? A run in from John Larunitis? A run in from Stephanie McMahon? Will the RAW GM laptop do a run in too? Time will tell.
Words cannot describe my excitment for this match, and not just the in-ring (and out of ring) action, but for what'll happen to advance the story line and the fall out from it.
So many directions they could go in, but I'll just go ahead and tell you about my prediction. Which I must admit, I'm not sure on, I have many, many predictions for where this'll go, but this is just my top prediction.
My prediction: I think that CM Punk will win. I think they'll have an epic, brutal and violent battle until right near the end. Triple H will hit the pedigree, everyone thinks he's going to win but Punk rolls out the ring, unconcious, meanwhile, Kevin Nash runs into the ring and beats the living hell out of Triple H with a chair, while John Larunitis stands behind him directing traffic. Then Kevin Nash can drag the motionless CM Punk over Triple H and the ref can count the pin.
CM Punk can remain a face from this, as he didn't know he was getting help from Nash nor did he want help from Nash and of course, Triple H would be gone. The Annonymous GM can speak up on RAW and say that with Triple H gone, he is now the highest ranking official in WWE and will now reveal himself.
Out comes John Larunitis with Kevin Nash and Stephanie McMahon in tow. Laruntitis reveals himself to be the GM, he hired Kevin Nash to take out Triple H and get rid of him and Stephanie McMahon can say how she and John Larunitis are now going to run the company with an iron fist and of course, CM Punk can oppose them and try and get Triple H back as in hindsight, Triple H wasn't that bad really.
Maybe WWE wont go in this direction, maybe they will. I seriously have no idea at this point, which is why I am so pumped for Night of Champions tonight.
I hope you all enjoy it as much as I will.
Match Number One: Intercontintal Champion Cody Rhodes vs. Ted DiBiase
This one has a lot of history to it, history that I feel the commentators haven't really sold to us on Smackdown, a history that the WWE itselt hasn't really played up that much.
