i liked Picard better before i say TOS, but not too much makes me laugh harder than a well tanned Kirk in a ripped shirt.

Just kidding. They're both good characters, but I'll go with Kirk since he set the standard that all other captains are measured against with his heroism and leadership.

I'm a Picard fan personally, but only because I didn't really grow up with TOS and the whole "military maverick" thing Kirk has going on wasn't such a cliche back then.

Wow, good question, Sisko was always to bi-polar to me, Jovial to intense anger in like a split second, but I did love DS9. Janeway was awesome, she took no shit, wasn't afraid of nothing.

I'm going to pick Picard over Kirk, simply because TOS was sort-of like the rough draft of TNG. Don't get me wrong, I find Kirk and TOS to be well worth watching, but I'd rather have Picard as my Captain, rather than a guy who sends people in red shirts to wander off and get killed! O.O lol

Also, there have been over two decades of people asking, which one is better. I have some new food for thought, how would either Captain handle the same situations that the other Captain faced? For example, Kirk facing the Borg. I can't help but think, if Kirk were Locutus, the actions of the Borg cube would be unpredictable; assuming they could handle the more chaotic mind of Kirk. Picard vs Kor: Picard would either allow the Klingons to take over Organia, because he'd see protecting them against their wishes, as a violation of The Prime Directive, or he would try to organize acts of passive resistance, amongst the Organians, rather than perform the acts of sabotage/terrorist resistance, as Kirk did.

I say Picard's the better captain, because sooner or later, Kirk's going to run out of steam and make some bad decisions.

TOS's Enterprise was only on a five year mission. Perfect for Kirk. 50 year? Picard.

Both were excellent captains. Kirk was the better tactician while Picard was the better diplomat.

Since I'm all for the original I'd have to say Kirk, TOS makes me giddy to the max. I've never been into TNG, but they both seem awesome.

I'm gonna have to go for Kirk. If TOS had the same special effects as TNG the show would have lasted longer. Kirk has that element where passion for goodness is shown, and that's how the crew loves him so much.

Hmmmmmmm... Probably Picard. I lack the coherence to explain why.

I know im late to the party but whatever, DS9 was the better show, but Picard was the best captain. Sisco had to play dirty and was also tarnished by his religious role, Kirk was always getting freaky, Janeway was more of a hostess than a captain, and archer was hardly a leader at all.

Definately Kirk. He is an awesome swashbuckler and he enjoyed a good fight. He relied less on technology and more on whit and bravado and he was not above breaking some rules when it was the right thing to do.

Give me a break, Kirk could whoop Picard's arse and take his lunch money!
