Welcome to Balto's Journal
Thankfully the first unpleasant part of this holiday season is done over with and just 2 more to go, but I suppose I am thankful for some things this year and I wanted to take this opportunity to express what I am thankful for.
As some of you know 2011 has been a very hectic and difficult year for me and through the most darkest times in my life I've come to realize a few things. The first most important thing I learned was how to appreciated the friends who were there for me when I had no one else to turn to. It's sad how so many people use the term "friend" or "best friend' so loosely and unfortunately this year I learned where I stood with many of my "friend". True, It's always nice to have friends in the good times but what I believe defines a true friend is some one who is there for you thought not only the good times but also there for you in the bad time. At this point of my life i am done with fair weather friends and I appreciate the friends who didn't abandon me when I needed them the most.
There were many "friends" of mine who I was there for when they went through some tough times. I was there for them when they needed me wether it was financial or moral support I was there when they needed me and it hurt to have those same friends abandon me when the tables were turned and now I needed them. To those people I must say good bye and wish them well, I only hope you never know what its like to feel the empty feeling of being abandoned by fiends you thought cared about you,
To those of you who stood by me I would like express my thanks. You have made dealing with the recent hardships of life a bit more bearable. I know I'm not the easiest person to be friends with and I often have a hard time expressing myself but I think today was a good opportunity to share how I feel about those special people.
Mongoose_Ink - I think Mitch is probably the only one who understands how difficult it is to be my friend but despite how many things we usually are at odds about at the end of the day he's still there when I need moral support. Thanks for putting up with me.
buckhopper - Jake I wanted to say thank for being a good friend No matter how much I vented I knew you were always there to hear me out. I went through some extremely tough times this year and you have no Idea how much just having some one to talk to helped. You can always tell who your true friends are when you go thought the darkest times your true friends are there to see you through. It seems like I never have a problem finding friends when its all about the good times and hanging out, those "friends" are a dime a dozen, but its people like you who are true friends, who still want to talk and hang out even if its to hear some one vent. Thank you for that.
quickxyk Eric, thanks for being a good friend. I appreciate your kindness and your optimism. I also admire your ability to look on the "bright side" of things.
Mitch Jake and Eric. I hope you know that I am grateful for your friendship, each one of you hold a very special place in my heart. I appreciate your kindness and I appreciate you guys for not abandoning me when I was going through a very tough time in my life and for being there for me when I needed a shoulder to lean on. I always appreciate your company. As you already know Im not the easiest person to be friends with but I wanted you to know that your kindness and friendship was never taken for granted but has always deeply appreciated. I hope you never have to go through what I have been through this year but if you ever do I hope you will know that you can always count on me to be there for you too. Thank you.

Now I'm not saying all furries are like this, I know a lot of good people in the fandom all Im saying is that most of the ones I've had the misfortune of assuming to be "friends" with have been that way. Getting tired of getting used is all.
I desperatly need a friend but at my age, 52, it's hard. Especially in the fandom as the fandom is so dang young in the age of the persons as is the fandom.
I'm also still wet behind the ears in the fandom as well so very few know me. I have a terrible time socializing normally.
I have much the same feelings as you do and wish I could find someone to do things with outside of the meets. Worse yet the furry meets are so far away from where I live in the San Francisco Bay Area so it's hard to meet fellow furries in person.
I really wish I could be your friend (a local one as I call it, not long distance over the Internet).
Most people still don't know what that means, other than a no-name guy on facebook that increases a number.

Still theres nothing wrong with acquaintances.People dont have to be best friends forever or enemies like Ive seen one artists seem to have the opinion of. it is always good to know those who are mild friends. and who are your bros/buds/homies that you can always count on to have your back. Its never going to be many people really.theres only so many hours and energy a person has and choices get made.
