Hahaha ... urrf.

Ok, so, I stumbled across this the other day:
http://forums.somethingawful.com/sh.....p;pagenumber=1
It's a SomethingAwful thread where the resident goons mock Let's Play videos on Youtube. It's giving me delightful MST3K vibes, so I've been watching them with glee for the most part.
But ... oh god. Some of the videos they're mocking are SO BAD, they're actually making me a little angry. And y'know, it's not just the poor production values or lack of gaming skill, it's the player's ATTITUDES. Like, there's this series of videos of this guy playing Doom. And he's bragging about what a pro he is, he's got the difficulty cranked to Ultra-Violence, he talks shit to every enemy he kills, but ... he SUCKS. He wanders aimlessly, he doesn't seem to know how to strafe, and he FREAKS OUT if he encounters more than three imps at a time. And this is just in the first couple of levels.
Now it's like, if he was HONEST about it, I'd cut him some slack. Maybe this is his first time, or he hasn't played it since it was released ... whatever. But he makes such a big deal about how awesome he is, and ... it makes me a little angry, actually.
Same thing with the Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes movie. The guy playing sets it to Extreme difficulty and turns off the radar, because, you know, he hasn't played it in ages, but he's pretty hardcore! And then of course he's completely surprised when the guards notice him fumbling around, and blames it all on Snake, and the guards themselves for having the audacity to shoot him. He never even tries to be stealthy, and during the entire ten minutes never makes it past the first room.
And then there are the save staters! These are especially prevalent on Donkey Kong Country movies, but there's a Super Mario World run in there somewhere that does the same thing ... ah, yeah, the ones by XRayX4417. It's like, if you'd just PLAY THE GAME NORMALLY, you'd probably get pretty good at it eventually! But they don't PLAY THE GAME, they SAVE STATE every 10 seconds, and then load when even the slightest thing goes wrong! Or, better yet, they save in the middle of this chaotic swarm of enemies, and then load FIFTY TIMES IN A ROW because they can't remember that they need to avoid an enemy right in front of them, or they run off a platform, or they do SOMETHING, because they get CARELESS! And it takes then ten minutes to finish one fucking level because they have to save and load 100 times! JESUS! What's the POINT? It's like an exercise in abject frustration! LOAD die LOAD die LOAD die LOAD die LOAD die. If you'd just CONCENTRATE for five fucking seconds you wouldn't NEED to load!!!
Anyway. Sorry. Little pet peeve of mine, I guess.

... *cough*
Also, these are fucking hilarious so far. I'm watching the Super Mario 2 video where this kid just can't shut UP! XD
I can't trash talk games, I mean I've had a few "Oh man, that was epic" moments*.. but I mean I couldn't get an inner dialog with a doom baddy going, where he was my sworn enemy. >:U
One thing youtube has done is allowed us to see just how little context most people have into how insignificant they are. .-.
*The first dragon I ever killed, back in DAoC with a group of 60~ people, felt pretty epic at the time.. After we'd done it 19 times in the next 2 months with only 1 failure, I kinda got bored of it.
And, I dunno, I just thought my experiences were an isolated incident or something. I don't play many online games, so it wasn't really until I watched these videos that I realized there really ARE such things as noobs, and that it's not just experienced players mocking the inexperienced ones for no reason.
I have to ask though.. which of those vids was good? I tried to watch 3 and they all seemed like shitty videos that some dork was making worse by talking over .-.
BILLY MC
This is why I don't particularly care for videos of people playing games.
If I want to see the game played... I'll do so myself...
I am guilty of save stating repeatedly on some games... but they deserve it.
Like CombatFrogs.
At least they're not backing up their saves each time.
Wow, I must say I never expected to see that thread brought up here XD
Seriously. That game is impossible. Even on easiest difficulty.
The one other remarkable thing about Zero Wing is that one can use the ZIG's tractor beam on certain enemy ships and then use them as shields or send them hurtling back at the opposition; the same sucky-sucky system is used to pick up and carry bombs.
I'd say it's worth playing, but I think there are much better Genny shooters out there, like Thunder Force III, Gleylancer, or Gaiares. :9
And it's probably the single most difficult scrolling shooter I've ever played. And I've played Dragon Blaze!
Zero Wing's first couple of levels arent too bad, but then things really go downhill. One of Toaplan's other side-scrolling Genny shooters, Hellfire, is also unforgiving in the same way. The player's ship starts off with a variety of shot patterns (this game and Namco's Blast Off! have a lot in common, there). I felt even more underpowered, playing Hellfire, than I did playing Zero Wing. :P
Anyways, those are great. Not nearly as hard as Dragon Blaze or Zero Wing, but tons of fun. And the ending sequences for Gunbird 2 in particular are great. ^^ (hint: if you play 2 via rom, make sure to look up how to unlock the secret character, Aine)
Especially in the first Half-Life. No save points, save anywhere you like any time! Did I take advantage of it? No, half the time I'd make it three hours into the game, then fall off something and remember that I hadn't saved at any time in the past three hours.
Whoopsie.
That's why I actually tend to prefer games that have defined save points. Makes you develop skill, and reminds you not to be an idiot like I tend to be.
I've never cared too much about being great at any particular game - I tend to suck at them - but I do care when the game stops being fun. Reloading all the time tends to have that effect. It takes me out of the moment and it dulls the sense of danger. I suppose if it doesn't bother you, fine, but you definitely lose the right to throw a tantrum when your resulting lack of skill bites you in the ass.
I also remember the hell it was to escape sometimes, when you saved in the wrong situation.
...I think I mostly prefer nethack nowadays, the game that diablo apparently drew inspiration from. Death is permament in nethack, and there's no saving expect for when you exit. This makes gameplay rather intresting, as you have to think every turn...
In Nethack I play rather haphazardly and quickly in the few first levels, and only get careful as soon I got somewhat decently far.
Sometimes that's why I prefer playing on the real console. I don't get the urge to cheat ahaha.
Some hack by FuSoYa is one of the best I played so far... difficult but not unfair. Hacks with IWBTG difficulty is not fun.
IWBTG is fun only because the ways you die are varied. :P
When I say I couldn't beat the first level, I meant the first level AFTER the introductory level. Haha. I'm not so bad that I can't negotiate a tiny castle with four koopa troopas.
... I think I might try this again. It looks like such an interesting hack.
...just the name turns me off from that hack. It's strangely familiar thou... >_> <_<
And most SMW hacks with weird names like that tend to suck as well... >_>
Made by the Lunar magic author too. There might be better hacks, but this one is good.
But man, now Desert Pyramid is kicking my ass. Well, mostly I'm lost. I've still got a couple ideas, like maybe a hidden door shows up when I use a P-block in a certain place ... but I'm not sure I've even explored the entire level. Y'know the first green pipe in that level? Well, ZSNES crashes, without fail, whenever I try going down it. I think I might be stuck, if going down it is vital to completing the level.
It might that you patched a messed up ROM too...
ZSNES have that inbuilt nowadays.
I do trash talk at times, but not constantly. It's usually when I pull off a good kill (one where the odds would been against me) in a game that I do it, not every kill. And then it depends who I'm playing as. When I kill people with the spy, I tend to laugh loudly... but for myself.
This video amuses me too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uWSeTkgAwE
The part with fast-forwarding what made me laugh specifically...
I played through most of the game, though is stuck at some dragon boss... pretty close to the end.
Like you said, some of them really suck at playing, but besides that most of the commentary they give just isn't anything funny. No sharp quotes, puns or other jokes that fit the game.
I use save-states as a time saver when dying or missing a platform will cause me to repeat a lot of game. I dgn't film it, tho or pretend I'm any good--I do it precisely because I suck at certain things and ploying the samc stetch over and over gets frustrating. I rarelb consult guides, tho--I like to work it out myself.
