It was a bat that latched itself to the side of the Discovery shuttle three years ago today. Unlike other bats, it didn't fly away when the rockets turned on, and actually did ride the shuttle past the tower. It was probably incinerated swiftly afterwards, but there's a crew of people who want to popularize the Space Bat, either because they love bats, space travel, or both.
