Gizmodo actually had a talk with the CGI experts at ILM.
Completely faked.
But well done faked.
Why?
Most likely, they are a CG studio looking to gain notoriety to break into an industry crowded with existing CG shops.
Theres hundreds, if not thousands of one man, or small group CG shops out there now. And since CG isn't unionized like traditional hollywood production guilds, movie studios can not only pick and choose from nearly limitless choices, literally anyone who can do decent work has a chance to get a contract for a movie.
Breaking into the industry to make a name that gets you that work is the hardest thing there is...But some guys pulling a viral video stunt with millions of views can get that instant recognition that makes a career.
And makes you money.
Thats why someone would fake a human powered flight machine.
