Why I don't often comment on artwork anymore
13 years ago
My dear fellow artists,
Tonight, I felt compelled to inform you (any of you who read this,) that I usually have a comment, a constructive criticism, or sometimes a short comment of glowing praise in mind when I look at your artwork. Sometimes I go ahead and leave these comments on your artwork, but most of the time, I remain silent, keeping my opinions to myself. The reason for this is, simply, that I feel as if people who offer criticism or anything beyond "that's great!" get ignored, or get a negative reaction from the artist or even from other viewers. It seems to be especially true of artwork involving attractive nekkid characters, not that I am surprised by this. But there, too, is where I feel as if leaving my comment would not be welcomed warmly, if paid any attention at all, because when I look at an art submission of this type, most (if not all) of the comments consist of basically this; "Oooh, he/she's hot! I wanna' yiff him/her!", or "Wow, looks great!", or "Aw, how cute!"
And when I see any kind of criticism left in place of an overly-flattering, perhaps even sleazy comment, it is either ignored or shot down in most cases. Maybe I just have the misfortune to stumble across the negatively-received comments, and I miss all of those criticisms or descriptive comments which really tell the artist WHY we like their art, and in some depth, and are graciously received.
At any rate, I did not intend to turn this into a rant, and I am not trying to poke at anybody in particular, but to simply let you know why I may view and perhaps add your artwork to my favorites without leaving a comment--it's not out of disrespect for you, and I'm not just going around, collecting porn or whatnot--I really appreciate your artwork for what it is, I enjoy looking at it, observing your drawing styles, painting styles, trying to figure out some techniques you may have used, which I would like to try, etc.
So please, if I 'favorite' your artwork, assume that I really liked it and spent some time looking it over so as to better appreciate your work.
That's all for now! Until next time I have something to share.

it's because people get overly sensitive about their work, i prefer the one's that offer criticism. it makes me know -why- you like it rather then you just like it... it kinda helps me see what I'm doing right. Those who flip out i feel are just overly protective about their work... everyone is entitled to their opinions of course, i do get defensive when I'm accused of tracing.... but that's another thing entirely, i usually ignore the "that's good" etc. comments because i really honestly don't know how to respond to them.. but that's just me i guess

OP
That is precisely what I used to get from other artists--I could give them criticism (fair and not rude, of course,) and they would thank me for my observations, or at least thank me for taking the time to make them. While the artist's reply is unnecessary, I greatly appreciate when an artist takes the time to reply. So thanks, Tetsu, I'm glad that you still receive criticism well, and look for it on your artwork. I will try to remember to leave comments on your artwork, if you would like. =)

that would be wonderful, tho i have my face buried in my sketchbook as of late... I'm trying to get back into my swing due to a bit of a hiatus on drawing due to my HDD going corrupt and starting to delete things, but it's fixed now so I'm just trying to get back up on the horse so to speak
