redacteur, this seemed pretty interesting.
1. How did you discover this fandom?
Much like Mr. Redacteur, I got here by searching for werewolves on the college computers, after really digging the Werewolf: The Apocalypse RPG, and admittedly finding said creatures pretty alluring. This was around '97 or '98. One thing led to another...
2. Did you participate as soon as you could, or did you "lurk" for a while? If so, how long?
I was on alt.horror.werewolves for a fair while, eventually got on some mailing lists, then to IRC, FurryMUCK and a few others, and then to Second Life. I've given up on all but Second Life and FM, pretty much, though there are still plenty of furs I talk to via IM.
3. What was your first contact with another furry in person?
Gosh, I can't remember, it was a long time ago. I remember there was a.. con-ish-thing in 1999 or thereabouts, which was in the middle of bloody nowhere and it was cold and rainy all the time. It was, mostly, awful.
4. What is you level of involvement with the community? Do you do draw, write, build costumes, participate in forums, etc.?
I make artwork and music, but they're not exclusively, or even predominantly, furry works. And the forums, for the UK folks at least, are full of Bad Crazy; while not strictly forums as such, I tend to be more active on Reddit, and even then not in furry circles. I did very much enjoy going to Confuzzled last year, however -- though getting there this time around is rather in doubt.
5. Did you like anthropomorphic animals before you found out about the fandom?
I suppose it depends on how broadly you define it; I've always thought werewolves were pretty amazing, but more traditional furry fare (The Lion King, Redwall books, so on and so forth) have really not been of much interest to me. I've been quite keen on the non-anthropomorphic variety (wild canids and felines both domestic and wild, primarily) for the longest time, though.
6. Did you begin creative activity (drawing, painting, writing, music, etc.) or greatly increase your creative activity after finding the fandom?
Only by virtue of coincidence; I was at art college when I found the fandom, and I was pretty young at the time. I wouldn't say that my creative activity is overly involved with the fandom; more a case that some of my work is furry, rather than I make furry works. Creative work for me is incredibly rewarding nonetheless.
7. Counting both online and offline interactions, do you spend more leisure time with furries, or with friends not involved in the fandom?
Most definitely furries, perhaps due to inertia. I wouldn't say it's particularly a good or a bad thing; it's just a thing.
*Spoilers: Snow leopard muzzles are generally grey.
