something you might want to check out is Fist of the north star. thats vary violent and bloody.

Fist of the North Star was amazingly violent but with 80s animation it might not be what he is looking for.

Now BERSERK was a little low budget, but an absolutely amazing series, also amazingly violent. If you would like Zen I can link you to a music video on my webspace that is nothing but gore to get you a little familiarized with it.

Im a sucker for well drawn anime's. just dont know any out there that are well drawn, plus action packed and scary and violent.

If you're into the plot, I suggest not looking into anime music videos. A majority spoil all the good parts and cast them into ruination.

I would highly recommend the two Devilman OAVs ("Genesis" and "Siren, The Demon Bird") that came out a while ago. they were pretty damn violent and the second OAV had some beautiful choreography to it. Even the third OAV The Apocalypse of Devilman had some nice violence to it.

Although it isn't out yet, if you wanted something truly disturbing you could check out Speed Grapher. I have a few episodes on my computer from the time before it was licensed.

Though it isn't violent until the end the only other one I would suggest is Perfect Blue, just because of the superb animation and because I love a good Psycho Horror.

Most of these you can find on torrents if you want a look at them. I'd be happy to transfer an episode or so of Speed Grapher to you if you wanted.

There are probably plenty more than this, but my mind is all fuzzy right now :p

There's also "Blood+, The Last Vampire". SUPER GOOD animation and VERY bloody. >"^_^"<

If you're interested in a manga with the same qualities Blame! is a very gore/horror manga.

Elfen Lied and Hellsing are very nice, but short. Hellsing was stopped because it was "too ultra violent, scary and bloody".

I only saw one episode of Samurai X (prequel to Kenshin) but from music videos I saw of it, it looks like it's got some nice violent bits. People getting chopped down the middle and whatnot.

Agreeing or building on what other said, Elfen Lied is pleasantly fucked up, a dozen or so episodes that have an interesting plot and some rather gory parts...

Hellsing was a lot of fun to watch, and I heard they're making a Hellsing 2, so if you end up liking that you'll be in luck...

Blood the Last Vampire is a short movie, probably only 30-40 minutes, but it's got very nice visuals, and as promised Blood and Vampires.

Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust (I think that's the name) is a full-length feature animation, it's got some bloody bits, but mostly it's more interesting and creepy in parts...

The new Hellsing OVA's were supposed to be released this month but were pushed back to Febtober... Er, February.

Ooookaaaay, I think it's time to whore another post. All this talk about anime got me stirred up.

Here's some I've pulled from my very own manga/anime library:

GANTZ is extra gory.
HELLSING has a lot of blood, gore, and violence.
ELFIN LIED has blood, gore, and a plot, which is nice.
BASTARD is violent and bloody.
AKIRA has some very bloody/gory parts, but there's a lot of plot building. Great movie.
BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE has a lot of blood, but not much gore and muted violence.
DEMON LORD DANTE is pretty bloody/gory/violent.

That's about the extent of my library on that topic. Sorry, but I wouldn't know what a "scary" anime is because little frightens me. I do however know that Gantz is pretty fucked up. Of course, on the topic of anime, I must advertise my favorite anime series, Gravitation, with its uber-cute characters and incredibly hilarious antics. Warning, it is a gay series.

I would have to say Elfen Lied on this one. The entire opening sequence ( 7+) minutes is nothing but a bloody rampage through a military facility. Its awesome.

I remember seeing one not to far ago.. Not bloody and stuff, but it was an okay anime series... Its called Paranoia Agent. ^^ hope that helped some...

I saw that you were looking into the Berserk anime and I'm fairly certain that it had a Dreamcast game to with it, so you might want to look that up as well if you end up becoming a fan of the series.

o.k. this is a REALLY late post, but nobody mentioned The Guyver: Bio Booster Armour.(I think I spelled that right) it's pretty bloody, is really cool, very violent. it's got blood gysers, arms being ripped off, holes being blown into mountains. now, be warned, there were a few movies that were made separate from the ongoing series that was done, you'll have to look around a little to find the right one. i'd tell you what the distributer was, but it's been so long since i've seen the series, like, ten years.

I agree that Guyver is indeed very good. Another one worth checking out is Devilman. Possible Devilman Lady as well, but am unsure about that one. I belive the 2 Devilman ones are by someone named

With the Guyver ones, there are many that are god, from the OAV that I think was either 30 or 60 minutes called Guyver: Out of Standardized, the one series in the US ATM called Bio Booster Armor Guyver, and, if you don't mind the japanese audio with english subtitles, may I reccomend the 26 episode TV series they are or have alreqady done in Japan called Bio Boosted Armor Guyver.

Also, if you can find em, though is very rare, at least in the US it seems, but if you can find the mangas of the forementioned ones, they as well are probably good. I have noticed that in the mangas, they are more able to be free with the stuff then in the animes.

Also, in the short OAV of buyver, it has a female Guyver, which is interesting.

Ikki Tousen (Some as it is a martial arts type of anime, but has a lot of "fanservice")
Kite (From what I've heard & barely remember is bloody. Depending on what verson you got, can have hentai, as the original version or the butchered US one, to make it for theaters apperently)

Bible Black has some violence & stuff, from the few I've seen. Though if you aren't a fan of futanari/herms/dickgirls, then stear clear.

Some other possibilites, by looking at my old VHS covers, so am unsure:
