SYLPHEED!! :D
Ever since i can remember, I wanted to be a star fighter pilot, strapped into my star fighter, fighting my way through space :P
.. I cant explaine my obssesion with sci fi. But I just took my imagination as a kid. Starting with such things as Star Trek, Buck Rogers and not to mension, Battlestar Galactica. These were just my foundations, then came movies like Star Wars and a japanese cartoon called Macross known as Robotech. Filling my imagination.
I have always hoped that they would make a great space shooter game that would alow me to realease my craving for flying in space with my wingmen and saving our planet against the odds.
There has obviously been games that have been made that would satisfy me, but i have either played them and was not fulfilled, or they are on PC and I didnt have the computing power to play them :/
One game I did enjoy was Colony Wars 1 and 2. But it was not enough for me. And cause im so fussy, the graphics are important.
Latly there seemed to be a lack of interest in space shooters. but just as i thought my hopes were going, yesterday I heard that there is a game being released in Japan called Project Sylpheed. It looks like it just might be something that will be able to wet my taste buds. I've seen screen shots and it looks awesome. It will be taking advantage of the power of the xbox 360, so Im sure to expect a good game. also the japanese seem to know what the kiddies want so i have high hopes.
Just will have to hope that it will be converted to english and will come out in the UK sometime soon..because I am sooo excited :3

Unfortunately, this little yeller dingo doesn't have a 360, and probably won't. Looks like I'll be missing out. ;_;
I enjoyed playing that game, although the second game was as tough as nails - and I thought it was cool if you lost too many important battles it was game over and you got to see this cool animation.
I think it was of a guy in prison (player character, I guess) and things were looking grim for him. I think you had to assume he was going to be executed - then a robin flew onto the window ledge and sang to him - just before he was taken away...it was very moving. :)
Hopfully when Project Sylpheed comes out, it wont be overly difficult so u cant enjoy the game. I also hope they give u the option to switch from cockpit view to chase view. Being a fan of both anime and sci-fi, it should be really nice :3
I got Battlestar Galactica on the PS2 as well, the storyline was good and the classic cyclones were a blast, but it was tough as nails. I got as far as flying the cyclone raider and gave up, the game could have used a better check point system.
I never played Battlestar Galactica - but I heard of it - and god bless places like Gamestation to trade in games that suck...hehe...
We bought a 360 when it first came out - but for some stupid reason, we sold ours shortly after because there were simply no good games (or ones that were REALLY short) out on it. Of course, sod's law being what it is - there are now plenty of games out which look GOOD...such as Chrome Hounds and Dead Rising.
If Project Sylpheed is as good as you say - that'll probably convince me to get another 360 as I love that kinda game too. Although with the speed at which they bring games out from the japanese market, we should have another by then. :)

also..
"Just will have to hope that it will be converted to english and will come out in the UK sometime soon.."
That suggests you live in the UK? ^-^
Of course Colony wars 1 and colony wars vengeance were great, I loved the music on all of them plus the story was amazing, still have them to play now and then and see the endings, yes graphics are crappy, but still good ^.^.
Freespace 2, still great game plus since now its open source, you need to see the mods made for it, including a battle star galactica mod being worked on at:

and

There's also Freelanncer which introduces you to the world of free space travel, you can go anywhere you want and buy better ships and weapons, very addicting, and the online play is not bad :)
I only played Wing Commander I wish they remade a compilation updated for newer computers to play them again.
X-Wing and Tie-Fighter were also great the original ones they had everything, the ships, the missions and the darn goals :)
There has been some incarnations of sylpheed that i remember, shooters mostly and I think there was a line-based one where you piloted, very tricky to use but old for 386 computers.
i mean, i loved Decent 1 and 2, but..... it seems he´s looking for something more spacey like.
with capital ships & stuff.
damn you, now i have that crazy urge to download those again.... -.-
I didnt liked homeworld at all, the ships are cool, but the cooler ones are soo weak ( ion frigates )
Homeplanet
the ships have space inertia XD
on the highest difficulty you have to fight inertia, and at the same time, like 200 enemies xD
i'll send it to you by UPS once i get my DVD burner back =3
Keep the hope alive ^_^
I looked up this new game and it turnes out they are related. This is the latest incarnation of the "Silpheed" franchise, which has been around since the 80s--before even the SegaCD.
MMmmmmm.....wet tiger taste buds.....
But yeah, I can relate to your sci-fi addiction, kitten. My life has always been tormented by similar cravings (though more as an explorer than a fighter). What makes it all the worse is my equally powerful love of high fantasy. Wanting to live in two directions at the same time is a tug-o-war on the soul.
I would almost recommend that you play EVE.....but it's usually not as fast-paced and 'space fightery'...unless you wanna be a pirate or something.
While the graphics are stunning and panoramic....they're not nearly as demanding as some games. The game has, after all, been out for quite a while. The system requirements are quite managable now.
R-type Final (PS2 also) is my current favorite. I'm STILL trying to unlock everything in it (101 unlockable ships). but that is left-right sidescroller, not top-down.
As far as the 360 one goes.. judging on the developer's past history, I'd say it will be a fun game for about 6-8 hours. It will probably be pretty short, but very pretty for that time. Just don't get your hopes up too high.. I was psyched for Sylpheed on the PS2 when it was going to come out, only to forget about it for a few years and finally found it cheap.
I'm waiting for a fully 3D HUGE starfighter game, that is story-driven. I dunno if anyone will make it though sadly :/
I still remember (with great satisfaction i must say) Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, and Rogue Squadron 2 for NGC, i know im a vicious fan of nintendo, but i still remember those 2 (specially the second one and the hundreds of crazy tie fighter bastards shooting you at the same time xD)
And Star Trek isn't any better for all you star trek fans, phase out of fricken ballistic/hybrid weapons? The fuck is that all about? One fricken phased energy sheild, wow you are invincible.. And the funny thing is we are close to making those, NOW. Jeeez.. Or just Distortion fields aka spatial contortion buffer. Plus, ballistics/hybrid weapons have more potential! BLARGH HONK that ticks me off.
Battle Star Galactica!? Yeah thats an awesome show. You see Macross Plus by any chance?

It's cute and so very wrong at the same time. :)
