Blog Entry: Titles are nice

Something I'll always remember from gradeschool was our seventh-grade reading of Saroyan's "The Hummingbird that Lived Through Winter." It had an ambiguous ending, and our teacher (an amazing elderly black woman) asked us if we thought that the bird lived through winter. It was impossible to tell from the story itself, so none of us could answer. She said, "Of course it did--because the title says so." Which I thought was kind of a cool device. I like the usage of titles like that to add details, though not to remove them, as seems to be the case with that story.

There's that, I suppose. Though at the same time, that title leads you in one direction, but the ending could cast doubt on it. Can't really argue much more since I haven't read the story. I don't think that this story accomplished what your hummingbird story did, though.
