In the past, mixtapes have been hard to go after legally as long as they aren't being sold and dependent on the distribution model, but yeahhh there are many good white emcees, and they have to work harder to compensate for people like mac miller >.>

I've never even heard of Mac Miller until now. Kinda wish I'd stayed ignorant, I think I died a little on the inside while checking out his music vids.

I don't know, I think it's really stupid when music artist sue each other over stuff like this. I mean, when it comes to rich music artists, it's called stealing; but to some other artists (visual, or auditory) that aren't so rich, they see someone appreciating their art and showing it by coming up with a twist of their work . I will admit that if Mac didn't give credit, then that's something to be ticked over... but for 10 mil., that's just ridiculous. Seriously, why does Lord Finesse need 10 mil. anyway, I'm sure he makes enough money to be called rich anyway... psh, 10 million, I'd be set for life if I got that kind of money.

I get sick of hearing about famous music artists suing others for using parts of their material. I remember learning when in the 90's, scratch DJ's like Q-bert and Mix master Mike were getting their butts sued just because they used just small music samples to scratch with. Now-a-days, we hear music from a plethora of DJ's, thanx to the sampling they've done.

And FA is a fantastic example of this, we see artists here drawing others peoples work, with or without permission... I don't know how many complaints are out there about such thing here on FA, but I have yet to here any complaining about it.

There's a difference between, as far as FA goes, drawing someone else's work and, say, copying/tracing and claiming it as your own. This is definitely the latter... and I've seen whole accounts with directly plagiarized work on FA before.

Not that I was a Mac Miller fan to begin with.

As far as suing? ...I don't know if I agree. This was on a mixtape; I don't even know that they make any money off of mixtapes. So unless he went around saying that he did this beat himself...

You've got a very good point with having whole accounts being copied, that stuff is just wrong. But here's the thing; true, Mac used the same beat as Finesse, but Mac used different lyrics. And here me out about the FA reference, because I wasn't talking about whole accounts that is full of uncredited art.

I'm going to use the bronies as my ammo for this one; sorry bro's, it's not to be anything against y'all, it just makes for a great example. We have this HUGE uprising of the pony community and we see the art just multiplying and being sold. Artists are taking characters from a show that they have no contribution to and using those characters to make money from. The artists are taking someone elses art and deviating a version of their own and selling it, most likely without proper consent. Same thing with Mac and Finesse here; Mac took Finesse's beat and changed it up with his own lyrics, why is that so bad? Heck, Andy Warhol became FAMOUS for taking someone else's photos and manipulating them to his taste.

So, yes, you make a great point about direct plagiarism; but in my opinion, Mac did what a ton of artists do by taking ideas from others and reconstructed it to their liking and I feel as if Finesse is suing only because he see's that he can some serious cash very easily. It definitely would have been the right thing to do for Mac to give credits where credits are due, but I certainly don't agree as far as going for a law suit to do so.

Nice to see that someone decided to argue my opinion; I like getting different perspectives, seriously.

Yeah I know Lord Finesse but never heard of Mac Miller

Back in the 90's there were a lot of significant copyright laws passed due to sampling. Some of them even had stipulation to the amount of time the artists material could be heard.. even much so that some artists were speeding up the samples to get around the laws. That being said Finesse's hip 2 da game is from that time period when artists had to provide credit and get permission to use said samples. That continues on still today.. LF had to pay for the rights to use those samples from the artists he sampled from and provide credit in the liner notes of his CD/Album. If Mac did neither.. he ain't paying his dues to use that material. Because even today if LF's track was used in a movie he'd be getting royalties from that use and the artists he got permission from would too... Flip it back on Mac... if he were to get paid for his track being used in a movie or some other form of media LF better get paid as part of that too. That's how some of the business / legal end of things work. Also why you have organizations like ASCAP and BMI on the royalty side of things. Anyway after that .. yeah kinda heard of Mac .. but know of Lord Finesse. At the risk of soundin old <who am I kidding :) > I know its still seen as bitin' someone's material but today's Rap artists should do more covers of old stuff that came before them just to show a little respect for where it came from.
