Old School Gamer Rant (Warning I Sound OLD Here)
Me and a friend were talking last night about how the videogame industry has gotten too expensive for it's worth. One time giants in the industry are tanking now because the multi-million dollar productions are not selling as much as the once were, and meanwhile it seems like the mobile games and some of the indie games out there are slowly taking their place.
One of the things that's annoyed me about the current Gen consoles is that they strive to be an all-in-one multimedia system on top of just being a game console. Once upon a time, a game console did one thing: play videogrames. So what was so wrong with that? Sure, you could play blue ray disks, download music, browse the internet, and do this and that on our current generation of consoles... but I can't be the only one that's bought an Xbox 360 because I wanted to play games on it right? And now there's word that the next generation of consoles requires you to be online to play the games. That's going to suck because it takes away one of the best things about an NES or Sega Genesis - if you happen to be somewhere where there's no internet, or if your internet is down (because it DOES HAPPEN SOMETIMES) - you and friends you're with can always just plug one of these into a tv and play videogames for entertainment. And you can play with your real friends, the ones on the couch sitting next to you. Consoles today think that we rather play (and thus force us to play) with that whiny 12-year-old brat spouting curses and racial slurs over Xbox live. Am I missing something here?
TL;DR: Gaming has gotten way to complicated.

besides, who do YOU know that has a seperate TV set? everybody takes everything with them
as a first gen gamer, literally, I've found gaming just gets harder and harder, even with all the people complaining about "casual gaming" taking over
Convenience: They want the game anywhere they are, even taking a crap in the local mall.
Climate: Stand alone TV's will die with our generation, Rimmy These children who think HiFi is anything higher than a 24KB/s MP3 and graduate too stupid to tie their shoelaces (that's why they all use Velcro), are what the market is making games for.
Control: Companies have the ultimate control. Sony, Microsoft et-al can "bullet" your system so it never works again, weather you pirate stuff or not (local article speaks of thousands of consoles accidentally "bulleted". Cost M$ a small fortune to get the customers going again). They can also make your games "disposable" (die after x number of days) unless you pay license renewals. They can also make your game non-resellable (was announced by Sony, but several states have already ruled it illegal). User information... they can buy and sell kids souls now like adults with credit card/Airmiles info.
The industry turned evil.
Invest in the Kickstarter link above would be my suggestion.
but "climate"? c'mon, man...every generation says that about the next one when they get conveniences. i'm STILL hearing the old "in MY day" line about tech.
There, I said it

You know what I mean, middle aged man
Also: they already have games out that require a constant internet connection.
Also: also: am I just imagining things or was the Philips CD-i marketed as a multimedia system?
I'm sorry but I'm not going to spend my money on that.
I don't want to buy into anything that requires you to be online to play every game, either. Internet multiplayer capabilities are great, but that should remain an option, not a complete necessity. I agree with your points there. If it does take that turn, though, I suppose I can rest easy knowing I've got a big ol' backlog of current and past-console games that I'm still working on playing through!
