Story Ideas - Drachenin Racer

Might be writing a new novel on the Drachenin Race.
Its inspired by a Natl Geographics report on Taiwanese bird racing. The show itself is only about a professional brid racer who raise pegions as racing birds. The birds are trained for racing and the 1st pegion getting home will have a hugh amount of prize - around 1 million USD. And ofcourse the birds arent getting a penny of it.
The race is releasing the pegions from somewhere 500km away from the coast and let the pegions fly back to their homes within a time limit. Only a few bird would qualify as racers (500 out of 30000) and the rest just either flew away, missing their way home, or just drown in the sea. The show focused on the racing and the bird owners, but somehow I feel lost of the birds who never make it. For the pigeons its a brutal life to face, as the gladiators - they are trained to race, its a matter of win or die.
Birds, are with wings. When we see birds flying in the air we often get the idea of freedom. When we are facing our own lives, yes, theres lots of hardness to get through and ourselves is also in a survival game of win or die. But at least we get the prize, if we are winners. But when we feel unlucky on ourselves, what about the racing pegions?
So it would be a story about a Drachenin racer.
