Just played Guild Wars 2 Free trial, and it is awesome!
So Arena Net had a "refer a friend free trial weekend" starting on Thursday, people were able to invite up to three friends to play the game, a friend invited me so I can test if it works on my laptop (my 4 year old, hp laptop that can barely even play Team Fortress 2. lol.) and it worked alright after turning the settings WAY down, including one that made the image slightly fuzzy but still looks ok. I am concerned about how it would be able to handle World Vs World though.
The game is AWESOME. its an mmorpg that ACTUALLY emphasizes on the RPG part! You go through your own personal story which can change drastically based on your decisions, then exploration is also fantastic in this game as well. You can explore each region and locate Vistas and points of interest and other things which will give you some experience individually, but when you get 100% completion in an area you get some really valuable items. You might even find a few hidden caves with a treasure at the end when exploring.
Basically it has the Choices and Repercussions of the Mass Effect series, and the Exploration potential and rewards of Skyrim.
"Questing" has been completely redone. You don't go from npc to npc and get about 10+ tasks that are meaningless and feel pointless and spend many hours in one small part of the map and then eventually go on, no! you are actually making meaningful progress with everything you do. There are events that pop up all the time that you can participate in that will give you a lot of gold and experience and some loot as well. There are "quests" labeled on the map as hearts and you are usually given several different tasks to do to complete the quest, and everybody in the area contributes and gets rewarded. Sometimes the difficulty (and rewards) in both events and quests grow the more people show up. some events have "succeed and fail" conditions and both can lead to a chain of other events. alot of events also have and effect on the world as well, like one camp will either be in ruins and the waypoint unusable, or an enemy fortification is under allied control and you fight to maintain that. What YOU do feels significant.
There was one event where the "lionguard" as they are known were mounting a full assault on some "Fanatics" base, there were two entrances, you choose which one to back, me and several other players were hitting the west side, other players hit the east side, we converged on the center of the base about the same time, then it was a War zone and it was AWESOME. Then out of one building a massive Ice being burst into the plaza and it was a huge and intense battle to bring it down, even with all of these players. There must have been at least 20 players there and that boss was a real challange!
The combat is great, it is more "skill based" then "uber gear" based. You dodge roll from side to side and that alone opens up some strategy and makes combat feel more satisfying in my opinion instead of walking by some enemies and you slap them and they die just because of the weapon you are carrying. When you are at a high level and go to a low level zone it will scale your level DOWN so that the area is still interesting and can still be a challenge. In alot of mmos it seemed like there was absolutely NO point to go back because there was nothing to gain and no challenge to be had. "oh enemy *slap* well their dead."
The game is full of alot of great content, and it has only been out for a few months and I can see alot of new and great things coming up for Guild Wars 2 in the future.
