Oh the places you will go...
The launch of the Wii U reminded me also of something special six years ago, to which was when I waited in the line with sixty other people, freezing at a target. Watching many people share their stories in what they would do with their Wii. It was hyped up like many of the latest video game systems of the time and the dawn of the last gen war with the sony ps3 being released shortly after it.
I recall working at a local Wendys and the drive thru window in making enough money in order to get it. At the time I also had a few friends and we debated on which would be better the PS3 or the Wii. Long story short I recall that night in what I left in order to get it. At the time spending much of my free time on furcadia which did bring me here afterward and what adventures would follow.
A year after that time, nearly five years ago to this day, I would visit
bluefiredragonz and share it with her family. It was a lovely visit to say the least, which would bring me the joy on that black friday shopping at a Best Buy in Minnesota to get my Sansa Mp3 Player 2GB that I still use today, it holds over 625 songs too. At the time Zelda Twilight Princess was all the rage and I did bring this along with wii sports.
Skip a little over two years later and my visit to Florida and to
Drache-Lehre and showing off its capabilities with New Super Mario Bros Wii and again more Wii Bowling. The weather was hot, but the fun to be had with everyone was memorable and around christmas time of that year.
Skip again beyond to about August when I brought my Wii to share again but in Montana. You can see where this is going. Slightly hotter than Orlando could be for sure, but it held its twilight moments in my hotel room with a bit of Zelda Skyward Sword and the one Wario Game.
I could not also forget the times playing the Simpsons game, Spider Man 3 and both Mario Galaxies, especially the second one which truly pushed the platforming metal and was worth the reward using the motion controls. It took 40 hours to complete fully.
The Wii was a blast for what titles and how it was used though the night before was something of an adventure. Waiting outside at Target I did for the most part due to the stores all selling out of pre orders since september, around the time of my younger brother's birthday. Went to the casino and ended up winning 45 bucks back then but missed out on the white ones at game stop. That was ok because I only wished for the black one.
Now during this time of night, making frequent trips home due to it being close by to my house that it was possible to do so. No one did show up to my luck atleast 6 am which I found out by staying there that long at times later on. I took a breather to attempt to get one at Walmart which was also nearby around close to midnight.
Now when I tried to get in line there for the Wii U there was several there and I asked about the line and was told where to wait after a group was there by the photo development booth. Now a gentleman with a cart was also told to get in line but was not there and clearly told after I was, yet the one walmart worker allowed him to go ahead. Now we both wanted a black wii u but turns out the walmart employee refused to say on how many they had left that were not preorders. Turns out my luck was this person was able to get the last black. I was not at all happy by the turnout. I told them off in that person was not ahead of me but they allowed me to see the white one to which I told them I wasn't interested after seeing it. To which they also tried to sell me just the games without the one I was trying to get. Not a very good tactic in selling things.
Long story short on that end, back to Target with a resolve to get a system and eight hours later I did get the black wii U at Target, which goes to show seemingly I was geared like the previous system generation the one I was to purchase. Which in a humerous way predates itself to the gamecube purchase I made on launch at the very same Target. So the three current gens of nintendo systems, same place I purchased them.
Booting up the Wii today, I did like many have done using a SD card and transferred the wii shop purchases to the Wii U and was greeted by a wonderful and cheerful waiting screen of pikmin at work to deliver my data back and forth.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9q4uaI5sIY Something like this. I think it was a way for everyone to see their data in a memorable make its way to a new destination in a loving way.
Now a few hours later or a few moments before this, I was greeted again checking that oh so familiar weather channel on the wii as to look back at it. A channel for the past six years felt like a home every time i booted it up. With it's memorable music and weather at the fingertips, it was always good to see where I was and what every place I had visited had in that time. I was greeted by this song in particular: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYFTSh5MRg4 It was as if my old friend knew. It was time for it to rest. The memories left in notes of the miis made along with what I played would live on in its calendar, but it also knew with the passing of those files it was time to let its new sibling take over. The Wii's time fading to memory like the gamecube and N64 before it, I listened to the song and just recalled all those special memories made over these years that included it and things in general. Like I have typed here, it's been a wonderful journey even with the ups and downs.
Things as simple as a gaming system that we keep in our homes can hold so much joy in part of who we share them with. Where we go and what we do with our time. I find my time well spent even when things did not go well as the good memories are what always live on. So as everyone else here unravels your Wii Us if you purchased them, don't forget the memories you made of your past systems and what joys they brought you. Embrace also what the new may make, and hopefully the next five or so years will be just as memorable. To which I hope they are.
Now if they can find a way to give me the weather and news channels back on the Wii U (The wiiconnect 24 is not on the Wii U) Perhaps updated but somewhat like its predecessor like this would be nice.
