Okay, that makes a certain amount of sense. I've always found it a bit difficult to be attracted to anyone I didn't know at least on the level of a casual friend, so I can understand how people might base their attraction on a deeper emotional connection. I'd just never come across this particular term until a couple of days ago. So now I know!

Gotcha, and as I said to the person who commented above you that makes a good deal of sense to me. I guess I'm just out of the loop, as I'd never heard the term 'til recently.

So, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that an easier to understand synonym might be "semisexual." Ie, one's sexuality is limited or suppressed or conditional on certain things.

I am demisexual... and it is a sexual attraction based on emotional connection.

It actually makes a lot of sense to me, as I've always found it easier to feel an attraction to people I knew and was close to and I've never really been able to get interested in someone I didn't know at all. I just never heard the term before, and I can't help being nosy.

It's not just sensical--it's completely involuntary. I cannot feel sexual desire for anyone I don't have an emotional attraction to, and oftentimes, it works the exact opposite way just the same. If I get too close to someone, I start getting aroused by them.

Well yeah. I don't think anyone has control over their sexuality or the particulars of why they're attracted to someone or not, and I didn't mean to imply otherwise. I'm sorry if I worded my reply poorly. I just meant that I think I understand, at least a little.

Right. You probably have some demisexual tendencies, but are not, per se, demisexual.

Nothing's ever really cut-and-dry, though, so don't worry so much about nit-picking with words. If I'm offended, I'll tell you.

Interesing concept, I do find myself attracted to people, but I prefer to know them before hopping into bed.

Same here. For all that I flirt around pretty shamelessly, I actually find it hard to feel any genuine attraction to anyone I don't know fairly well and I can't imagine going to bed with anyone I wasn't at least friends with. Then again, it's pretty rare for me to be attracted to anyone at all. I'm just kind of weird that way.

I've seen that most people were already able to fill you in on the term's meaning and origin, so I won't comment on that, but thought I'd throw an interesting tidbit in there!

Demisexual isn't always something someone chooses. A lot of demisexuals are completely unaware of their sexuality, and identify as asexual as they have never had any physical attraction to anybody or anything, but only find their sexuality after having a long and intimate relationship with someone. That's demisexual.

Usually those that identify as demisexual are either misunderstanding the term, or have found out through a current or previous relationship with someone close to them that they can become sexually attracted to them either through wanting to please them, or just through the intimacies of a long relationship.

I had a fear that I was asexual, and even identified as such until earlier this year when I started exploring with my partner. It was through wanting to please them that I found my sexuality.

Oh, I don't think anyone chooses their sexuality, or who they're attracted to and how. They can choose to act on it or not, but I think sexuality is something that's pretty much built in. Which is also, I think, why it tends to be a lot more complex than most people ever think it is. If there's one thing this fandom has taught me it's that human sexuality isn't as simple as straight/gay/asexual, and that while everyone can find a label to broadly describe themselves, everyone's sexuality is unique to them.

I really appreciate you and everyone else taking the time to fill me in on this. I suppose it just goes to show how sheltered I am out here in the boonies, even with my exposure to the fandom at large. But I think I'm beginning to understand and, while it's not a label I'd apply to myself, there are certain elements of it that kind of match with my own particular set up. Or however you want to phrase it. And like I said at the beginning, I'm just seeking to understand.

It does. But no, while I think some elements of it may apply to me, I don't think I really fit under that label either.
