What is it, though, with Autodesk products and crashing. I mean seriously... I nailed down why one of my scenes kept getting corrupted to being the association of a particle emitter to a field... I could play the generated stuff, but if I didn't want my scene to be unopenable, I had to disassociate it before saving.

Having flashbacks to my days doing classes in high school and college, AutoCAD wasn't much better :V It did teach me pretty quickly to save every few minutes, though, and I got good enough at it in my high school class I had loads of free time and was basically teaching the teacher.

Well, some of the scenes I've got are massive outdoor ones that take 10 minutes to save x.x

General rule of thumb is, if it would take significantly longer to redo what you've done than it would to save, you should save. Every half-hour at least, even with a 10 minute save time.

That sucks D: My mum always engrained "save constantly!" my whole life and its saved me from so many mishaps. Sometimes if I just fix one letter/word in a story, I do ctrl+s to save it and then do it again seconds later. She's turned me into a save monster, lol. Again, very sorry this happened. I had my computer crash once and I lost all my writings and I was so angry that I stopped working on certain things because I didn't want to start over. It fucking sucks DX

if it's of any condolance, back in '08 when i lost my first laptop, lost 5 years of story and project work i'd had all ready for compiling into a full on novel length piece of work. one comp crash, lost all of it.

This happened to me, just not as bad. Back when I had a desktop, I had written a fan fic for months in advance to post much later and my computer crashed and I lost about 15-16 chapters of story. I was so pissed. Then my first laptop crashed and I had a novel I was working on for a few years--only got to 6 chapters--and lost that. Luckily, my friend that I had been giving finished chapters to still had them on her computer, so that was a HUGE relief. Its just such a horrible feeling to lose something you worked so hard on for months or even years and then its gone in a few seconds. Needless to say, since the crash, I haven't worked on my book since because of being so upset over it :c

i've not even begun to "revive" that old project myself. think only thing intact from it are my notes and character concepts (which are luckily also in a paper notebook as well) and some major city names from the world map i'd drawn up :I

think the sole survivor of it all was this lucky character, http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8445990/ (whom my friend was loving enough to draw up all of his age concepts therein) more or less my little "shining star" that keeps that old project alive even within its sequel stories that he's basically side character to. i back up things like hell now cuz of that huge loss though ^^'

Yeah, same, after my huge HD crash of '03 took a couple things with it I started shang-haing some of my closer friends and asking them with a nudge and wink and an elbow in the ribs,(very sweetly if they weren't readers), if they wouldn't mind taking a peek-see at what i'd written thus-far. At the initial, 3/4 and finished pre-editing state it works wonders, JIC. Also nice if you want to get any in-progress feedback, which i love, in-case i lose my shit and start going in some bizarre direction. Between their copies sitting on various computers hither, thither and yon and a couple thumb-drives, nothing's ever -permanently- lost since. It works really well... Novella/novel length stuff is such a bitch to lose, sometimes that's -years- of work-. ~.~

That's what I always do in both Maya and Max. ^^;

That's why I make new saves for every big change I make in Maya. Corrupted files are a horror.

I have a backup, but it's so old compared to what I did in the last version that It won't change anything if I redo everything from the beginning.

Lesson learned. Make a new file for every new big change you made.

I read some forum about this. I learnt that it's possible to recover corrupted maya ASCII files, but not maya Binary files. Of course, was using binary files, so I'm fucked.

Actually I still can open the file, but the character (and it's animation) is gone, I only have some meshes from the background left.

The new versions of Office got and autosave feature activated by default... it saved me quite a lot of times !

What version of maya are you using? Thats happened to me before and funnily enough, i imported my corrupt save file into an earlier version and it worked. I was fixing retopo in maya 2012 and imported back into 2011. If you still have the save ide recommend giving it a try =3

yeah, the "Saving 99% an crash" Errors, i love them. Had that a few weeks go, was in video editing mood and worked throught 20 minutes of (5 angel) concert footage, at saving that stupid programm crashed... (at AUTOSAVING!)

that is fucking shit indeed... and what's worse is after something like that happens I get so pissed off and dejected that whatever I was working on doesn't get redone at least for a good long while

Wouldn't entirely trust auto saves, make sure you create regular back-ups too

That sucks, I know what its like to lose something like that, one time I made a pic that took me half a month to do, then I lost it and the file became corrupted, I was so pissed and such that I didnt have the motivation to even continue or try again at that point.

Quite annoying when that happens :/ I can only recommend saving with an increasing number on the end. That way when a file is screwed the data loss is limited.

It never happened in 5 years, so it's like everything : a disaster have to happen before taking any precaution.

I prefer to disable autosave on any program because of the possibility that I might just happen to make a serious mistake that screws everything up too soon before the autosave does its thing to prevent my work from being lost

That may work if I was doing animation in flash, but it doesn't work that way for 3D.

Wow that sucks. My suggestion is using google drive. It backs up your stuff automatically and works like a simple folder. Although if your files are really big (gig sized) you might run out of the free space they offer and have to pay for more.

Whether its a computer program for music, animation, art, or games, crashes always ruin things.
Not even video game consoles are safe anymore, and countless hours used with technology seems to get lost over and over.
Thankfully, we don't rely on technology to literally live, or we'd all be dead before we'd ever reach our actual childhood.

I lost my 500GB HDD over the summer. Just quit working, and all the while I thought it was something else acting up...I was fortunate to have backed up MOST of my things...but one morning when I went to boot the ol' gal up and get the last of my files off her, the HDD was totally dead. Didn't even recognize there was a drive in the case. So yeah, I know how you feel :'( But don't give up and turn it into a learning experience. I had this happen to me twice for me to get into the habit of hitting whatever "Save" keyboard shortcut there is during the course of my work and also "Save As" in order to make multiple copies. JUST on the off-chance something like this happened. It has a dual effect. Not only do I have a history of my progress so I can easily go back and revert changes and start over if I really fuck something up, but if a crash corrupts my file then not much was lost.

Just kill Microsoft--they pull that shit all the tine.

my solution to this problem, has been to save my files with new names every few hours... so i'll have maybe seven or eight files on my hard drive, charmeleon-croconaw60m.sai, charmeleon-croconaw185m.sai, charmeleon-croconaw260m.sai, etc...

i know it doesn't do you any good now, but this is a common problem with SAI, photoshop, although you might have set a new record for the sheer amount of work lost from this kind of an error... that's really really terrible, i'm sorry, i hope you never have to go through this again, it can be so demoralizing...

Some programs have user-made plugins you can download which implements an automatic backup or autosave features, losing progress is frustrating as hell though. Especially sudden power outages

one of the things i always do when its a large project is do incremental backups - usually three copies of the same file over writing the oldest as i progress . taht way in the event of a catastrophic failure on save i dont loose everything

You may want to take all of the previous increments or other saves you have and put them someplace safe off your hard drive and then do a virtual memory dump. It might fix your problem. I hope it helps, I had this same problem before and it fixed mine. Best of luck.

crashplan.com . Backs up your stuff every few minutes as you work. Even if the program didn't eat your data you're bound to make a mistake and want to go back to an old version sometime. Crashplan has saved my ass several times.

This really reminds me of the first time I tried to create expressions in 3DS Max. Every time I tried to render out an animation with said expressions the program would crash and would irreparably corrupt the scene and any files associated with it.
