Merry Christmas, and it's good seeing you're still around. I assumed things had taken off, hence the absence, but it's very good to hear that it's keeping you busy and keeping you happy. Take care, and I hope to hear more from ya one of these days. =)

It's been a while. Nice to hear an update from ya Charha. :3 Drawing books for kids...that actually sounds like it would be a really cool job, that. What kinda books have you worked on?

I've got a bit of a routine going on, applying for grants and working with what I get. It's fun, but there's hardly any money in it, so I'm always looking for extra gigs.

Currently I'm working on a little book that tells the story of a fox cub who gets lost in the woods. The idea of the book is to depict local nature and also to combine elements from traditional children's books and comic books.

This year I worked with a small group of colleagues to promote comics for children (since we have very little of those in my country). We published a compilation of short stories.

Next year I will hopefully get my fifth comic album published (in this one series I've been drawing). It's a collection of Sunday comic strips. Oh, and then there's this one comic book I drew with a colleague. It's, uh... it's about funny cat anecdotes, so nothing too serious.

I've also been working on something personally-rewarding yet not very profitable, so I know the feeling.

Fox cub eh? That sounds like a cute and appropriate little tale. :3 And it's good to help kids get some comics and other reading materials.

Sounds altogether like fun sorts of things to illustrate. ^^

Y'know, FA is... kinda like that already. A huge, disjointed semi-fun semi-unfun mess. Also, good to see that you're still alive, and your job's keeping you busy.

I would love to have some of my comics translated and published abroad. I've got my own web page and stuff, but it's all in Finnish. I'm doing alright locally, but Finnish comics don't really get distributed in other countries even though quality-wise some of them are on an international level. I guess it's cheaper to import comic strips than to translate and export them. One can blame the comic syndicates and the market in general, I guess. :(

you seem to have a good grasp of the english language from what I understand having communicated with you in the past. :) You could theoretically translate to English yourself and that would immediately expand readership. Actually don't know how the internal gears work or what type of contract you'd be under. Point tho - Finnish -> English = Charha or other bi-lingual Finnish fur?

Theoretically I could translate my own comics - or my boyfriend could, because he does that sort of thing for a living. However, in practice many agencies require that the translations are done by their own hired professionals. This was the case with an agency called Burning Bridges (I always thought that was a really strange name) who brought a sample of Finnish comics (mine included) to be displayed in the London book fair a year ago or so.

I'm not looking for pure readership as much as the opportunity to publish and sell my comics through publishers. Starting a web comic would be my plan D, but that's the very last straw, because it takes a lot of time for me to draw even a three panel comic strip and there is zero money in it. In my country Kickstarter is not an option because of legal issues concerning collecting money for charities.

The comic artists in Finland aim for their own merchandise because it's pretty much only way to make any actual money from their comics. Sadly, apart from a small batch of t-shirts, my designs haven't really hit the market. It's mysterious and a bit embarrassing because people tend to have this idea that my comic is actually quite popular.

It's awful knowing the term 'starving artist', and all that it describes, is more rule than the exception for artists. I did assume there are some legal-ish contractual details that make life a bit more difficult. For every wildly popular and lucrative artist out there, there easily has to be a thousand hungry ones!

Doing well I guess, yeah. I doubt anyone can make a living drawing comics in a country as small as this, but at least it's easy to get noticed. :)
