Close encounters of the stink kind!

The Rantings of an Art Crazed Chow, Second verse, same as the first.
I think in earlier journals, or comments I made in the journals of others about the booming wildlife population in my area, you can't really step without stumbling across something animal . Well, tonight I had a scare for sure. Check this out, over at my GF's house doing grunt work and bills of course. In doing the final walk of the dog for tonight, I ran across something that looked like a skunk. I took a wide berth and as I round the corner of the part, the creature I encountered was not a skunk, but a black and white cat, hence the dog's reaction. I gave a sigh of relief and prepared myself to head for home.
Building maintenance where I live have been lacking since the sidewalk lights were out yet again. My night vision is not the best in the world, but it was enough to detect movement on the dark sidewalk. Normally I would not have thought nothing of it but I slowed down, just enough to see him/her/it. (Wishful thinking makes me want to believe the critter was female, I don't know why, I can relate to female creatures better than I can with males.) I had my keys in my hand, ready to head for the door, on that keyring was a small light which I pressed to show to the world, or my part of it, a skunk! I expected the raise of the tail, or the handstand before the spray but nothing, the critter just rambled or shambled their way to the grass, I assuming looking for insects or a tidbit or two. I waited until the skunk made their way to the front of the apartment, in front of my living room window before I made a slow move towards the door. I made it inside without being pelted with skunk odor. I looked out my living room window to see the skunk move along the lawn as if I did not even exist, which is good I think.
In my youth, I had many encounters with skunks, but at a distance. This was the first time ever that I was within weapons range of a skunk. Yes, there was fear, but still, I stood there for a moment transfixed upon the beauty of such a creature. My respect for the skunk is healthy, look but do not touch.
Cheers.
