Religion and Music

OH SHIT he's opening that can of worms.
STAND BACK EVERYONE.
Why does every fucking deathcore song have to be anti-religious? The Plot In You, Suffokate, Bring Me The Horizon, Within The Ruins, Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza, like holy shit.
FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO SCREAM ABOUT gaaawd. I feel like it's always the same. Deathcore band finds lyricist. Lyricist writes anti-religious lyrics. Whole band thinks they're the first to do it or just doesn't care. Band plays shows. Atheist's huddle together to condemn all religion based on past experience with Christianity, which is one (1) religion. Band is hailed as lyrical revolutionaries. Band gets signed. Band gets music videos. Religious debates on youtube occur. Wash rinse repeat.
I'm sick of these bands getting signed. I'm sick of going onto youtube and finding the same religious debates about the same mundane shit. And I'm ESPECIALLY sick of sitting through awful fucking lyrics about "you're living a lie" and "your god isn't real" just to hear some wicked riffs, nasty breakdowns and bomb sound production.
Part of the reason is that (I feel like) it's everywhere is because of the culture. Hardcore kids, all about shock value right? "WHOA LOOK AT ME I'VE GOT TATTOOS AND PIERCINGS AND I'M AN ATHEIST AHMAHGAD." - Mallcore Kid #29308432432.2 It's a trend. Atheism is a trend. Kids doing everything they can to piss of and rebel against their parents and society. Wanna know why I think it's a trend? I always ask atheists: "Why are you an atheist?" The usual answer? "Unno." Sometimes I get "Cause Christianity's for pussies." And then I ask "Well what about Islam? Buddhism? Judaism?" And then they stare at me like I have a dick growing out of my forehead hahahaha. CHRISTIANITY'S NOT THE ONLY RELIGION, SUPREEEZ.
Lemme just stop here to make one thing abundantly clear. I don't practice a particular religion. Yes, I've been baptized and given a cross (I lost it though, sorry Jesus :x), yes my grandparents were Catholic, but no, my parents weren't especially Christian and they didn't expect me to practice. I'm agnostic, which means that I don't necessarily believe but I'm open to evidence. Sort of an in-between atheism and theism.
And don't get me wrong, I know about religious wars. I know about the Protestant Reformation and the Crusades and there's probably a million other wars started because of religion, but that's just focusing on the bad. I've known people who's entire lives have been turned around or at least influenced because they believed in something and practiced it. How many charities do you know of that aren't funded by a churchly organization? How many orphanages do you know of that aren't almost always run by a priest? How many homeless shelters, etc etc etc? (Not as many as the government/state/city runs, I'm sure, but still.)
I just think religion is important. Besides the material value, it provides spiritual guidance, salvation for some, very good lifestyle choices for others and overall, for all the bad it's done, I think it's done just as much good.
But the worst part? It just really gets under my skin to hear people talking down to someone because they believe. "HAHA JESUS IS UR IMAGINARY FRIEND". So fucking what? It's better to believe in something, put the issue aside and live your life how you want to than building what LOOKS like your entire identity around this concept that you've spent maybe five minutes thinking of. Religion, whether you believe or not, is your journey with whatever deity you believe or don't believe in, and you should never let anyone, not music, not me, not your parents or your society, ever influence what you actually believe in.

Lmfao. Okay. Now that I got all that out: If you are an atheist and you truly do none of these annoying things and you're respectful of other people's beliefs, awesome! Let's be friends. (No really!) This intent of this journal was to poke my head in to let people know I'm not dead, rant, and to exercise my thoughts on a topic that's been building up for a little while now. I do not ever intend to offend anyone, and if it happened, sorry. They're just words though ;3 I'm just sick of hearing people thinking they're superior because of one choice in beliefs than another.
Now, if there are some holes in my argument (always are!), feel free to point them out. I love a good, respectable debate, and I always appreciate the differing points of view. For now, I'm going to bed though haha.

but i am not sober. so i cant possibly make a legitimate comment until i sober up.
just know that in about 12 hours, i will share my non-shitfaced opinion. kthxbai
This is pretty much my view. It should be shown to everyone, ever. <3
You summed up everything Id want to say on this topic for the most part. I have my own ideas as to why that message is so prevalent in deathcore and heavy music in general. but I feel its mostly because of how metal and punk began as a way to protest the norm. Christianity is the norm ergo, they rail against it.
Im tired of it. Sometimes I hear an angry deathcore song, and my rage-y feelings arent directed towards the subject of the song, but rather the vocalist. The level of vitriol in these anti-religious songs would receive pure outrage if they were to come from a Christian, or a Muslim. A change in topic would be nice at this point. I enjoyed the anti religious shit for about a year as a freshmen in highschool. then... i grew up.
There was an anti religious song by the Molotov Solution, and I always liked it. Because while it called out the religious nuts that shove their magic book down peoples throats, it didnt at any point say "fuck your faith!" or "god is a lie" or "your god is a myth" or any of those broad blanket statements. and it didnt rip on any religion in particular, just the dicks that dont know when to stop pushing it.
