"Nobody gives a shit about your no-Thanks header." Rebuttal
12 years ago
So I read a journal a few minutes ago (lapseph), about her disdain for people who write "Stop leaving "Thanks" messages". Naturally, this resonates with me as I am one of such people. I won't link to the journal in question (if you want to find it, look for it, and maybe watch her gallery and stuff).
I am quite offended, but she makes a logical point (about things I can't colate in my head right now because I'm tired and I want to get the body of my journal in before I forget). I'm offended because it is a valid point that I happen to disagree with, and it was delivered brutally (and if she's reading this, then "you've aimed well"). Not offended to the point where I'm angry or indignant, but it's kind of a unilateral stance to hold.
Let me run through the process of thought that happens when I see it say _C at the top navbar.
Me: *sees 2C at top navbar* "Oh. Someone's trying to talk to me! Maybe they have critique on my art, or something!"
Shouter: *copy-pasted "Thanks" message*
Me: "Dammit. How about the next one?"
Next shouter: *copy-pasted "Thanks" message*
Me: *hopes thoroughly dashed*
A thanks message is (on a personal level where I'm concerned) tantamount to spam in a system that expects it to be used for that purpose. No, you are not wrong for wanting to thank someone for their patronage. And no, I don't not want to feel the cold unforgiving sting of appreciation. But I don't talk to many people here, so every communication sticks out to me like a crooked nail. I take specific interest in it. And it turns out to be another dime-a-dozen message. In my header that apparently "nobody gives a shit about", I've mentioned many things about my conduct here. I like to roleplay. The shout could be about that. I've dropped an F-List dossier. Maybe someone wanted to discuss it. I've got a few hanging RPs from players who vanished. Perhaps they're trying to reconnect. There are friends I have here whom I can only contact through here. It could be them. I upload a lot of art. Someone having featured in (or having drawn it) could be lodging a complaint with me. I didn't read the rules of this place very carefully. It could very well be a passer-by politely pointing out that I have broken a rule so I can correct it before an admin gives me an infraction.
But no. It's one of those fifty-thousand messages that I need pay no regard to.
I don't care if you feel some obligation to thank me for watching you, whether you handwrite it, copy-paste it, or dammit skywrite it for all I care. I'm a no-nonsense person. I believe in common courtesy. Yes, you're welcome. Having someone subscribe to you feels pretty good. I get the same kind surge when I get a message from YouTube saying someone has subscribed to my channel. But I know people could be using their energy to better effect than reading a 4-word message I paste in with Stardock Keyboard Launchpad, because I could be better using my energy than reading it.
I don't exactly know what motivation you extract from thanking someone (yes I am that miserly), and I'm not going to attack your right to exercise the most common and decent courtesy (after "please"). I'm proud of you. If you've been serviced or complimented in some way and you decide the appropriate response is to thank someone, then your upbringing couldn't have been much better. Give yourself a pat on the back, there really aren't enough polite people in the world.
But your obligation to thank me? Leave it outside.
Alternatively, find me a way to suppress Page Shouts from appearing as notifications in the Navbar, then you can thank me until the Sun engulfs the Earth.
