Respect and Books

Alright so hear me out...I've recieved some shit in the past of about "disrespect to the Holy Bible". As in you're not supposed to do anything to it, such as burn it, shred it, run over it with a truck etc... Honestly, what's the point of paying respect to such a book? First of all...it's an inanimate object...it's a book...plus the religious have burned MANY books in the years humanity has been around. Am I missing something? Is there some kind of unwritten rule that says I can't deface a bible in any way shape or form, I'm supposed to just respect it despite the fact it's a book of lies, slavery, rape and a lot of fairy tales?
I'll put it to you this way...I'm a big fan of science, I live by it...would I be offended if you burned a science textbook? No. Would I be offended if you threw a book by Steven Hawking off of a cliff. Hardly. Would I honestly care if you were to sit there and take a periodic table of elements, roll it up and stuff weed into it, smoke it and then offer me some? Pass the joint man.
Honestly, I don't really get this apologist attitude, I don't get why people would get offended if I set a Bible, a Science Textbook, or fucking Huckleberry Finn on fire. It's a book! I could care less if it's your holy testament, if you were a stronger person you'd be able to take a bit of a statement. I'd gladly burn bibles because I don't like what they stand for. I don't like the fact that people prefer to take advice and live by them, because like it or not the Bible is not the greatest book to put your life behind.
You want to get offended that I'd be happy to burn a Bible, even if it wasn't to make a statement against it, be my guest, there's the door. Don't let your butthurt attitude hit you on your way out.

I'd also say that burning religious books is generally considered to be impolite. Just like letting out a big 'ol wet fart at a dinner party or jerking off in the living room at Grandma's house... there's really no logical reason not to, but we still don't out of respect for how others feel about these things. So I guess this would fall under your "unspoken rules" category, yeah. Put closer to home, this is why it's generally regarded as a douche move to leave overly critical comments on people's artwork-- you're free to do it, but it's not accepted and others will probably even think you're a flaming asshole. Ditto with creepy comments; I think most everyone on FA has had to deal with that, and it ain't fun.
Bear in mind that the above is what I think, though, and not what I believe should be law. This is why, even as a patriotic guy who loves America, I'm totally against laws outlawing flag burning-- what right does anyone have to make that action illegal?
But I really don't understand what your point is... seems to me like you too are getting butthurt because you have to deal with people who disagree with you. Guess what? Ten percent of Americans don't think man landed on the fuckin' moon. Regardless of whether or not what you believe is correct, people are going to disagree. Some will even tell you so to your face. Does it strike you as even a little ironic that you're criticizing others' disapproval of what you say/do even as you're doing the exact same thing?
*I also have a terrible problem with throwing things like old magazines and newspapers away. THEY HAVE PRINTED WORDS ON THEM AND I WANT TO KEEP THEM DAMMIT!
It's pretty much why it takes a LOT to offend me. And to be honest, pitching the argument "you're bitching about people's bitching" is something I hear time and time again...i guess it's part of being critical.
No hostility here however, i understand your argument.
"Bitching about people's bitching..." well, I didn't want to come right out and say that, but it's kinda what you're doing here. I wouldn't say it's "being critical," but rather that you're going after the wrong target. If you want to have an argument, have it about the issue at hand and not the people who are defending it and how they defend it. 'Cause you can find brilliant, respectful people who are wrong about an issue, and drooling idiots who support the right side of the issue. When you start making your arguments about people and not ideas, it's much harder to have a productive dialogue.
The one exception is if you're being threatened with violence, but that probably isn't the case here. Now, that sort of thing would definitely happen if you were an atheist, a Christian, etc. in the Middle East... but not here, thank God. And even if you don't believe in a deity, I think we can both share that sentiment.
But Iunno, I see where you're coming from, I may not really relate to it but sometimes I just have to rant.
