Zombieland: The Series - First Impressions
12 years ago
I was informed by one of my store supervisors (a very fun and geeky guy) a few days ago that Amazon apparently greenlit and started a Online video series continuing from one of the few zombie/comedies I've seen before Zombieland. I was made aware early that while it continues the story between the dysfunctional and spunky survivors: Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, and Little Rock, and their attempts in surviving the newly populated zombie hoard roaming the earth while having a bit of fun. The first episode was free (I don't know and doubt that future episodes will be so) and I have a short review of my first impressions on the series so far.
I think the main turn off I can see most people will have with this series is that, while the series continues to focus on the group from the movie, the original actors and actress do not return. The change in appearance is somewhat odd to take in (and one personal gripe about Tallahassee I have is that his cowboy hat is so far nowhere present like in the movie...or was it in the movie?) Another possible turn off is how the relationship between Columbus and Wichita that became established by the end of the movie has immediately been altered running with the plot formula of a "on again - off again" romantic relationship. There also may be some jokes here and there that may fall flat.

Personally; I'm so far enjoying the series. While the change in actors and actress's took a bit to get use to, the main personalities of the characters are somewhat intact. Tallahassee continues to be a laugh-riot and the main premise involved certainly helped made his antics and moments of "loosing his s&$%" close to gut-busting. The "on again-off again" relationship formula can sometimes get tiring especially when its used to suddenly/instantly break apart a plot point established at the end of one series/movie that we were already becoming accustomed too. However; this actually may help keep the relationship between Columbus and Wichita fresh while the series plays out. Would anyone really be in favor of watching one or two seasons of the two of them being lovey-dubbey the entire time? I suppose it was a bit awkward to show us Columbus may have wedding bells playing in his ears a bit too early as the series stated in only takes place two weeks after the movie. A little clingy much? >___>
The RULES also make a return, along with a possible Zombie Kill of the Week Motif once a episode if they play it right. Now there was only 1 new rule I can think of having been brought up in this episode where two or three golden-oldies made a re-occurrence. But since there are indeed a good number still unspoken from the movie, as the rules seem to go up to #33, and only maybe a fourth was mentioned, it's a good bet more will be revealed as the series progress.
The only other gripe some people may have is that each episode may only be a half an hour long (or 29 mins give or take), though it doesn't look as if any cut away's or commercials are present or will show up.
With that in mind; I would say fans of Zombieland should at least give the pilot a watch and see how it floats your boat. So far it doesn't look like it's rating is very good, which is a shame. Be aware; this can only be watched on Amazon Instant Video (at the moment anyways). And; again, while the Pilot is free I don't know if future episodes will be. Will it be worth the watch? Only you can be the judge of that.
I'm TimidTabby; that's my review and I'm sticking too it. GOOD NIGHT EVERYBODY!!!
