Question about my stories, and a small update
17 years ago
Hey all loyal friends, readers, fans, watchers, and probably some lost person who stumbled on this by accident.
Been wondering something as of late, and so I figured I should just ask you kind folk.
Do you think my writing style, as in format, organization ect. is acceptable? I know I tend to switch it randomly from story to story, though I do know I don't bother indent. Is that a problem? What about word choice? Am I using words that help paint a picture or am I merely splashing paint all over a mental canvas? Does it become a bother or a hassle o read over my poorly constructed paragraphs that contain anywhere from 1-20 sentences?
Just curious because it has been bothering me for quite some time now.
In other news, week 3 of my laptop not being here begins...which blows, cause even though it's easier to write without IMing folk, I still miss the company of you kind people. I still hang around the Black Labyrinth and YumChat when I can, hopefully see some of you there!
Also I'm going to be writing a novel during the month of the November. And when I say I'm -going- to, it means I'm -going to-. 50,000 words of erotic smut. How bitchin' is that?
Edit- ALSO! I'm aware of how crappy my icons for stoies <.<; I make them in MSPaint. I'm thinking about adding stuff like species to the list of things, though I need a better way to make those damn icons so they don't look so bad D:

FA+

If you're ever worried about length post it in installations or chapters x3
And I'm looking forward to the epic story <3
That's not to say there's some writing styles that I can't stand, but you've never breached or even approached or so much as looked in that points direction.
Say for instance this novel. I for one am very interested, and won't want to miss out! :D
And a novel hmm? Sounds neat. I wonder if my 76 or something page RP I did with someone that's being story converted would count as a novel? XD
Nothing wrong with MS Paint icons by the way, I made this story icon in MS paint:

As for the novel thing, my longest story, Devon's Gift is 40+ pages in MSN word and barely 17,000 words x3 for the contest 50,000 words must be typed in on month.
Looking forward to seeing you again soon... *cuddle
and im looking forward to the future stories, ive liked everyone thats come so far since ive been watching
Though, coming from a man that once wrote 80 pages in two days: Don't write 80 pages in two days. It hurts. A lot. It hurt me so much I've started using the phrase 'a lot' instead of more descriptive units of measurement. So I suggest starting early in November, as in November 1st, or preferably October 25th. Trust me, it's close enough to count...
And you're writing a novel? =O Awesome!
I personally find your writing style quite refreshing, in that you often choose to develop characters through dialog rather than through description or providing a glimpse into their minds, which really works well for your stories and is definitely effective, and your length of paragraphs is consistent with this style (Devon's Gift being a good example of this). Word choice is a personal thing, so I don't really have much to comment about that; I don't see a problem but if you want to have more variety in your vocabulary or something, then consult a thesaurus. My rule of thumb is to not use the same word in the same context in the same or even consecutive sentences, if at all possible. However, that's just a personal gauge that I use and certainly one can be a successful writer with different rules, if any at all.
So, don't worry about it, just keep doing what you're doing and we'll keep on enjoying it <3.
Short answer: Yes.
Your stories always read very smoothly. If you're making any mistakes, they're drowned out by the content of what you're writing. Either way, you're doing something right.
I know I tend to switch it randomly from story to story, though I do know I don't bother indent. Is that a problem?
Again, I never noticed. Indentation is more important when you don't double-space between paragraphs. I've never noticed you having any wall-of-text issues.
What about word choice? Am I using words that help paint a picture or am I merely splashing paint all over a mental canvas?
Your stories are generally pretty evocative. I remember, in particular, being wowed by The Last Dance. I still think about that one quite a bit. ;)
Writing a story is kind of like casting a magic spell. Words have power in their connotations, and if you mix them correctly, formidable sentences rise from them. Adjectives are fine, but if you really want to light up the reader's brain, describe with metaphors and similes.
Word choice comes with practice and experience. There will always be a better way to write something. Do strive to improve, but don't beat yourself up over it.
Remember, above all, that you're telling a story, not writing a news article. Just let your own voice come through.
Does it become a bother or a hassle o read over my poorly constructed paragraphs that contain anywhere from 1-20 sentences?
The next time you watch something on television, preferably a work of live action fiction, pay attention to how often the camera changes viewpoints. Some shots are quick, others linger. It depends on all sorts of variables -- how the scene is being paced, how much emphasis the director wanted to put on a particular image, etc. And it's kind of the same way with paragraphing. It's sort of a cue to the mind's eye that we're moving. Long paragraphs are like floating down a river.
Short paragraphs are like shooting the rapids.
Each can be effective. You can usually trust your intuition on that one. ;)

Yeeeah, I need to get back to the Labyrinth. Just haven't been feeling especially in character lately. c.c
Also I'm going to be writing a novel during the month of the November. And when I say I'm -going- to, it means I'm -going to-. 50,000 words of erotic smut. How bitchin' is that?
Quite bitchin'! :D Yay, I got you started! Now I pretty much have to do it this year!
Edit- ALSO! I'm aware of how crappy my icons for stoies <.<; I make them in MSPaint. I'm thinking about adding stuff like species to the list of things, though I need a better way to make those damn icons so they don't look so bad D:
Hmmmm, I don't know much about the thumbnail system around here, but as a shot in the dark:
A) Are you saving them in a lossless format like .gif or .png? Not .jpg?
B) Did you go to "Image - Attributes..." in Paint and set it to the correct width and height before entering the text?
If those don't help, then I'm out of ideas. ;)
So, to start off, I'll be blunt. I fucking love your stories. Hell, if it weren't for them being as well-written as they are, you and me would never have met. I tried many times to get ahold of artists who I love, but usually to no avail.
ANYWHO.
Your style of writing certainly does paint a mental picture in my mind, and I can see the events unfold in my head as i read, which is a rare thing for me in stories. I on't deny the fact that there have been a couple times where I had to re-read a section to better understand what was going on, but other than that they've been spot-on.
As for the contest novel thing, I am VERY excited to read this, and will attempt to read in one sitting, though i doubt that'll happen, with my schedule for work being so nutso as it is.
But it shall be read. Oh yes, it shall be read ;)
I dig the hell out of them, even if they weren't well written. Yet, they are. Which makes them even more awesome! I'm, honestly, very jones'd about your novel, and intend on printing it out and reading it at work. I like your icons. They're informative. o.O That's all an icon needs for a story.
Oh man, a novel? That's gonna be nuts dude, good luck to you!
Good luck with your novel! I'll probably not do much writing, I never do
I miss you T_T I hope you get back to ims soon.
On the topic of your icons, I think they're perfectly fine, simple and to the point.
