Tips or hints, eh? Might have a few for ya. :D

First, get into the habit of clicking the "Reply to this post" button before ya type anything when you reply to a comment. If you forget to do that, it'll just attach the comment to the picture/journal you were looking at instead of replying to the comment. The main reason ya wanna make sure you maintain the reply thread is that the person you're replying to won't be notified of your response unless you reply to their post. That one seems to trip up new folks pretty frequently. :3

Second, if you ever need to upload a picture which is too large for FA's maximum allowed dimensions, it'll be automatically shrunk down to fit. After you've uploaded it, if you go to your submission and click the "change submission file" link and then use that link to reload the same picture, it'll then upload it full-size and it won't be shrunk down anymore.

Third, check out THIS PAGE for codes you can use to put fancy doodads on your profile, journal and submission pages. The user icon tags in particular are nice if you're doing requests/trades/commissions for people and you want to link back to the owners.

Also, proofread when writing comments & shouts. You can edit your submission descriptions, journals and your profile page, but comments and shouts can't be re-written, so get 'em right the first time! The best you can do if you make a mistake is hide the original message and then re-write it, but it'll still leave a big box that says "This comment is hidden by the original author". XD

Lastly, be ready for creepy comments! XD
They don't happen too often, and they're definitely the minority, but they find their way to everyone sooner or later.

For shouts, no. There's no reply feature for those.
If you want to reply to a shout, just go to the person's home page and shout back at 'em. :3
