A few countries, mainly Myanmar and Laos, are set up for some staggeringly huge investment from the outside world as they have finally figured out that a sane and stable business environment makes companies want to set up shop there. For slightly different reasons, such as a gigantic mining project, Mongolia is in a similar situation. It won't take much cunning for them to go through some very rapid increases in quality of life, dragging up the entire region with them.

Do you feel that Nursultan Nazarbayev's economic policies in Kazakhstan will be (successfully) implemented under whoever succeeds him?

Just as Southeast Asia has rising stars dragging up the whole region, Kazakhstan has a few lead balloons on its borders. The government of Kazakhstan can play the game well or poorly, and it won't make much difference. Their fate is tied pretty much exclusively to Russia and China, as the only worthwhile trading partners in the region.

Well, China, Russia, India, the US, and if it gets it together, Pakistan. Kazakhstan seems to largely avoid drifting exclusively into one camp or the other.

I entirely agree though, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan seem to be the biggest potential trouble spots: endemic corruption, anemic economic status, and inroads being made by radical Islamist movements in both places.
