I am a few days away from writing a proposal for my final for fundamentals of art. The final piece will go into our professional portfolio. It needs to convey a message, as all art does. Whatever it is, it needs to be effective. I doubt we will be given as much freedom later on in the program.
What kind of art would be powerful enough to enter in a portfolio designed to convince someone to hire me?

FA+

i.e. if you are big into texturing and texture modeling, create your own videogame zone and do ALL the textures for it, if you like concept art, do a series of sceneries of how one fantastical place changes over time (from wilderness to farms to development, etc), if web design is your thing, do a set of web tiles and banners/headers, advertising: make up a product + brand then do an advertisement for it.
Other than that... >_>
I think it would be best if it solved a problem.
