New Pet

I really miss keeping reptiles. So I've been doing a lot of research and am planning on heading to the Austin Reptile Expo next month to hopefully acquire my very first corn snake!
I'm kinda surprised and disappointed by the reactions of everyone I've told. The Family and co-workers... they all know I've loved reptiles all my life. Aspired to be some sort of herpetologist when I was younger, even! But when I say I'm getting a snake they recoil like I've spontaneously sprouted a third arm. Seriously? D: I don't understand why people loathe snakes so much. I try to explain that corn snakes in particular are typically sweeties but people find it hard to believe. Guess I get to be an animal ambassador soon!

Forget them!
And congrats on your new baby! Also, i didnt know the expo was next month :O i can't wait to go ^0^
I'm ridiculously excited.
I've never been to an expo before so I'm certainly looking forward to that in itself, too. :)
I'll admit that I don't know much about snakes nor particularly have much interest in them, but they're not the big bad evil that everyone seems to make them out to be. Snakes, like spiders and some other bugs, are actually beneficial to people by just letting them do their thing.
Hopefully everybody else's disdain doesn't dissuade you from your plans! Have you had a chance to find a vet and make other such preparations yet?
It took me a while for my heart to kindle towards snakes. My family never liked them so exposure was from outside sources(school field trips etc). I was always afraid I'd find a venomous one due to lack of education so I avoided them while herping as a kid. Not to mention the feeding/housing requirements were beyond my costs at the time. But as an adult I am in a much better position to take care of a snake and they've really captured my interest over time.
I haven't found a herp vet yet but that's the kind of thing I'm gonna ask around for at the expo. I've started to buy everything for the enclosure and I will start testing temperatures as soon as I have everything in place. I definitely won't be discouraged. I've been watching lots of videos and reading lots of stories of people with their snakes and more and more I know its something I am ready to commit to.
