This would be a first, though, if major military action in a part of the world we've got interests in went opposed. It would mark the start of a long journey toward coming to terms with the reality of the 21st century and a lot of people are going to be unhappy (not to mention thousands will die) no matter what happens. The world is heaving again and we're not as strong or capable militarily as we used to be.

It really sucks that we have to say no because Assad probably is killing many innocent people, but I've got no faith left in the Pentagon's ability to handle something like this without making it worse for everyone.

the thing that gets me though is this civil war has been going on for almost 3 years now, and this whole situation smacks of kosovo all over again, one side is losing [in this case the rebels] so they commit an atrocity and blame it on the other side to get the "international community" [aka gullable us] to come to their rescue.

No, he isn't. He's starting another war in the middle east because people down there can't seem to stop being assholes. I don't think anyone's got any delusions about this turning out well for anyone, but then again, you can't let a regime get away with using chemical weaponry. I don't think anyone wants to be the hero anymore, not with vietnam, korea and iraq. The UK certainly isn't- we're done with war, we really really want to be done with armed conflict.
